Cole Kmet ($4,400)
It’s easy to forget that in 2020, Cole Kmet was the first tight end off the board in the NFL Draft. Coming out of the University of Notre Dame, Kmet drew praise as a modern, multi-faceted archetype at the position. His production was never enough to warrant awards, but he stood out as a rugged blocker and viable receiving threat on a smash-mouth Fighting Irish squad.
He’s largely kept that mantra in the pros, but he’s never been able to reach that next level. Kmet had a mini breakout last season, tallying 779 yards on 73 receptions. Add in the fact Justin Fields was the one under center, and those numbers are that much more impressive. The upgrade at signal-caller has not increased his fortunes. The additions of Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen have dropped him to fourth on the team in receiving yards.
Kmet is still an outlet underneath, and on a team that often has too many concepts downfield, he has the potential to see more work as a safety valve. In the last game, he caught his first touchdown since Week 6. I expect that red zone prowess to continue as this offense continues to move in a positive direction.
Tyler Lockett ($3,200)
It’s been an impactful decade-long career for Tyler Lockett, but this season has left little room to be inspired. The tenured wide receiver is on pace for his lowest output across the board since his second year in the league and has particularly been invisible the past month and a half. He’s only surpassed 50 yards in a contest once since the start of November. He no longer generates consistent targets, which has destroyed his ability to stuff the stat sheet.
Lockett’s lost favor to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who does everything Lockett does but way better. JSN’s monster usage has ruined Lockett’s fantasy floor, but at some point, the savvy veteran always has one more solid showing. The arrow has been pointing down on the Chicago defense for some time, and Seattle has put an emphasis on moving the ball through the air. If Lockett can go to work near the sticks, he can rack up enough snags for one more productive primetime performance.
