Saquon Barkley is having a monster season for the Eagles. He is the -400 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook to win the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. Barkley leads the league in rushing yards in his first season in Philadelphia and has helped this team reach a really high level in the past few weeks. The Eagles have now won ten straight games and have knocked off multiple likely playoff teams over the past few weeks, including the Commanders in the teams’ first matchup. Barkley has 198 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in that first matchup against Washington this season.
The Commanders’ defense has had issues all season. Barkley was able to run all over them in the first matchup and overall, they rank 23rd in defensive EPA/play. They rank 25th in defensive EPA/rush, 23rd in defensive rushing success rate and 20th in defensive EPA/dropback. The thing their defense does best is preventing the short underneath passing game. They rank 16th in defensive dropback success rate, meaning they are at least a league-average defense when it comes to preventing teams from staying ahead of the sticks through the air. The way that you beat this Washington defense is on the ground and then allowing that run game to open up deep shots down the field.
That methodology plays right into the hands of the Eagles’ offense. Philadelphia has the best running back in the league in Barkley and he should run all over Washington again. That will open up the play-action passing game where Jalen Hurts can take deep shots to DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown. Due to this game script, I am betting on Saquon Barkley to have under 11.5 receiving yards. Barkley has not cleared this number in any of his past three games and the Eagles seem content to just let him be a runner. The Commanders are the sixth-best defense in the NFL at receiving yards allowed to opposing running backs. That trend should continue, keeping Barkley under this number.
