It’s been one of those seasons for the Dallas Cowboys. Dak Prescott is injured, the run game has been non-existent, and they haven’t won a game at Jerry’s World yet. The passing game has been competent, posting the 10th-most passing yards. Dak Prescott is responsible for much of that production, but Cooper Rush looks to have some level of comfort now.
In his first start, Rush was only able to muster a laughable 45 yards passing, but then he put up 354 yards, a touchdown and an interception the following week. He had his best performance in Week 11, going 24-of-32 for 247 yards and two touchdowns.
CeeDee Lamb is the alpha in the passing game and has garnered 118 targets on the season. Jake Ferguson is second with 58 targets despite missing a little over two games. Dallas’ tight end position as a whole has 96 targets, the sixth-most in the NFL.
Luke Schoonmaker wasn’t much of a factor when Ferguson was healthy, receiving around 30% of the snaps and totaling 10 targets through ten weeks, but he received 10 targets in Week 11 and four last week while playing 53% and 65% of the snaps. Let’s not forget that the Cowboys used a second-round pick on Schoonmaker in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The total for this Giants/Cowboys game is a paltry 37.5 points and the matchups look to skew towards the run games, as the defenses are 31st and 32nd in EPA per carry. That said, the offensive lines are 24th and 27th according to PFF. In addition, these teams met in Week 4 and both run games struggled.
Schoonmaker isn’t a must-start because the game environment likely won’t foster a back-and-forth aerial affair, and he’s still not completely dominating the tight end snaps. He is relatively cheap on the Thanksgiving slate, priced $900 below Jonnu Smith, but he should be considered more of an ownership/leverage play than a must-start option.
