Detroit Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham is doubtful to play in Wednesday’s contest against the Memphis Grizzlies with a left sacroiliac joint sprain. If he is unable to play, it would be the third consecutive game that he has missed with the injury.
Cunningham, the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, has been enjoying his best season yet, averaging 23.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 8.9 assists — all career highs — as the Pistons have won eight of their first 19 games after finishing with the worst record in the league in each of the past two seasons.
If he is unable to play on Wednesday, Detroit will surely miss Cunningham’s offensive creativity against a strong Grizzlies team that, despite injury struggles of its own, has surged to an 11-7 record and sits in fifth place in the Western Conference. Pistons fans had better hope Cunningham returns soon, as the early-season gauntlet continues with games against the Bucks, Celtics, and Knicks next week. One player who stands to benefit is veteran guard Malik Beasley, who led the team with a 29.3% usage percentage on Monday in Cunningham’s absence.
