Kyrie Irving is averaging just shy of 25 points on the season, but operating without Luka Doncic (who has been ruled out Friday) should take his scoring opportunities to another level. While Kyrie finished with just 23 points in the first game that Doncic missed this season, he’s averaging 29.4 points in 12 career games without Doncic during his tenure with the Mavericks. Irving finished eight of those 12 games with at least 25 points, twice finishing right at 24.
A nationally televised NBA Cup game should bring the best out of Kyrie Irving, particularly in a matchup that he’s performed well in. Irving went off for a season-high 43 points less than two weeks ago in Denver, on a scorching 17-of-22 from the field. In five of the 12 games that Kyrie has played without Doncic in the lineup for the Mavs, Irving has gone for 33 or more points five times, and 42 or more points twice. Could be a good spot to consider laddering Irving’s points, but 25-plus feels like a safe baseline to start with.
