Captain’s Picks
Saquon Barkley ($16,800 CP): Touchdowns can be poached by Jalen Hurts. Deal with it. Everything else lines up. Barkley is the best running back in the NFL not named Derrick Henry. His numbers are not far behind Henry’s stats. The Eagles will be without one of their key playmakers. DeVonta Smith’s absence doesn’t directly impact Barkley, but Barkley was just fine with Smith on the field. What could change is the game plan. With Smith out, the Eagles could choose to ground and pound. The Rams have not allowed a 100-yard rusher since week two but routinely allow 70-90 yards per game to backs that aren’t Barkley’s caliber.
UTIL Plays
Jalen Hurts ($10,800): The DraftKings Sunday Night Football Showdown Slate is dominated by stars. Some shine brighter than others. Hurts’ star dimmed in the Eagles’ Week 11 win over Washington (26-18). He still scored a respectful 18 FPTS but that didn’t work at his price. He entered that game with three consecutive contests of 30 FPTS or more. The loss of DeVonta Smith hurts, but Hurts isn’t hurting for weapons. He has an elite receiver and borderline elite tight end. His running back keeps defenses honest, and he catches passes. The hurt of being without his No. 2 receiver might not hurt at all. Hurts could be forced to scramble with Smith out. It hurts the Eagles but helps in NFL DFS.
Demarcus Robinson ($4,400): The Rams were recently on a showdown slate. Cooper Kupp ($9,600) was recommended as the fade. The thought process was that both Kupp and Puka Nacua ($9,200) would not likely go off and both would not fit in an optimal lineup. They went off. They fit. Can that happen again? Of course, it can. With Kupp and Nacua receiving the attention of defenses, Robinson is always viable. He scored two touchdowns in Week 8 and Week 9. It’s flukey but it’s a showdown slate. At least one pick in the optimal lineup is always flukey.
Johnny Wilson ($800): This is a bad play. Face it. That’s life in the showdown streets. It’s a small player pool. We talk ourselves into ugly picks because that’s all there is. The studs are obvious. The value picks are land mines. Some hit and most miss. It’s TD or bust. The process is simple. Find a cheap player. Reverse engineer why that pick works. Presto! That’s Johnny Wilson in Week 12. DeVonta Smith is out. Jahan Dotson ($2,800) stinks. Wilson has all of the characteristics that fantasy football players geek out about — 6’6″, 237 pounds with speed. Maybe, all he ever needed was an opportunity. Maybe, he’s a rookie who was selected in the sixth round. It’s $800. He doesn’t need to do much.
Fades
Kyren Williams ($9,400): All he does is score touchdowns and the touchdowns have disappeared. After registering 10 TDs in the first eight weeks, Williams has not found the end zone in the last three games. His workload compensates but his work does not. Williams is not a great running back. He ranks 41st in yards per carry (3.9 YPC). Even if Williams does find the end zone, so will the other high-end options, and their production will likely be significantly higher. Williams isn’t a bad back, but there are brighter stars on Sunday night.
THE OUTCOME
The Rams are back in the hunt after winning four of their last five games. The Eagles are hotter. They’ve won six in a row and seven of their last eight games. The hotter hand is laying the points on the road (-3). This is not a matter of disrespect. The Rams are good but the Eagles might be great. One team is a playoff contender. The other is a Super Bowl favorite.
Final Score: Eagles 27, Rams 20
