Michael Pittman Jr. ($6,000; back) missed his second practice in a row Thursday and the receiver feels unlikely to play this Sunday vs. the Bills. If that is the case, Alec Pierce ($4,900) should operate as the Colts’ No. 2 wideout behind Josh Downs ($6,200).
Pittman Jr. has yet to miss any games this season, but in the two games Downs missed, Pierce produced great numbers as one of the Colts’ top two receivers, scoring 20.6 FPTS per game. In those games, Pierce saw a target on 20% of his routes – including five targets over 20 yards – and he ran a route on 89% of his team’s dropbacks.
Anthony Richardson was under center for these two games and now Joe Flacco ($5,500) is starting at quarterback for Indianapolis, but Pierce has flashed strong chemistry with Flacco as well, most notably with a 3/136/1 performance worth 25.7 FPTS vs. the Jaguars in Week 5 with Flacco at the helm.
Pierce is clearly too cheap for his upside if Pittman Jr. is inactive. This Sunday presents an excellent matchup for him vs. the Bills, who use zone coverage at the second-highest rate this season. Notably, 70% of Pierce’s receiving yards, 13 of his 19 catches, and two of his three touchdowns this season have come against zone coverage.
Pierce has the potential to add another huge fantasy score to his season resume if Pittman Jr. sits and will be an appealing target for both season-long and DFS formats in that situation.
