After 10 weeks, the wait is finally over. The preseason consensus No. 1 player in fantasy football, San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey, is on track to make his season debut on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McCaffrey has been rehabbing an Achilles injury he suffered in training camp. He is returning to practice today for the first time since going on the injured reserve list on September 14. McCaffrey still has to show that he is healthy enough to play this weekend, but this is the best news about CMC of the season.
CMC had an unbelievable year last season, totaling 2,023 yards, 67 catches, with 21 touchdowns. McCaffrey finished last season with 391 PPR fantasy points, over 100 more than the No. 2 RB.
Since McCaffrey has been unable to play this season, RB Jordan Mason has emerged. Mason began the season scoring double-digits in the first four games of the year. He also scored over 20 points in two games. In the 49ers last game, Mason only had six carries as he had to exit early due to a shoulder injury.
If CMC plays and has close to a full workload, Mason is not a great option to start in fantasy football. As McCaffrey’s backup last season, Mason only had at least eight points in three games. It is unknown whether CMC will have his usual amount of touches immediately or not.
