So far this season, the Jacksonville Jaguars rank 16th in the NFL in team receiving yards, with an average of 232.9 yards going through the air every week.
However, the lack of predictability from where this production will come from has been frustrating. 13 different players have registered a catch this season, with six pass-catchers recording 16+ receptions.
To make matters worse, the injury bug has bit the Jaguars. Heading into Week 9, Brian Thomas Jr. and Gabe Davis are each listed as questionable, while Christian Kirk has a broken collarbone that will keep him out the remainder of the season.
While there has been some uncertainty throughout the season, Brian Thomas Jr should be looked at as the clear-cut top wide receiver option for the Jaguars moving forward.
Brian Thomas Jr Fantasy Football Outlook
Through the opening eight games, Brian Thomas Jr. has tallied 33 receptions for 573 yards and five touchdowns. He leads the Jaguars in targets, receptions, receiving yards, touchdowns, and yards per reception. He also ranks seventh in the NFL in receiving yards.
Looking at the fantasy football production, Thomas Jr. ranks eighth among all wide receivers. He carries some big play potential, ranking 15th in deep targets across the NFL, and also is tied for 28th in red zone targets across the league.
Trevor Lawrence has struggled to get adequate wide receiver play throughout his career. Even with improved weapons, Jacksonville ranks second in the NFL in drops with several of them coming at inopportune times.
Looking ahead, expect Thomas to be the solution to the wide receiver problems that Lawrence and the Jaguars have been plagued by. The organization invested the 23rd overall pick in the LSU product which marks the first time they have used a first-round pick on a wide receiver since 2000.
Thomas has been targeted at least four times in every game and will see an increase in targets without Christian Kirk. Expect this to only be the start of Thomas Jr.’s NFL breakout and for him to play his way into the conversation for one of the premier pass-catchers across the entire league.
