James Gunn has made his choice. Aaron Pierre will join the new version of the DC Comics cinematic universe as John Stewart, a.k.a Green Lantern.
There are a few things to unpack here, especially if your only experience with Green Lantern is the 2011 Green Lantern film. Let’s get right to it.
What happened to the Green Lantern from the 2011 movie?
Depends on who you ask. Ryan Reynolds would have you convinced that he wiped that movie out of existence if you saw Deadpool 2.
But if you want the real answer, that character is Hal Jordan. He, like Stewart, is one of many individuals to take on the mantle of Green Lantern. Jordan will also be in the upcoming Green Lanterns project, Lanterns.
Nathan Fillion will also appear as a member of the Green Lantern Corps in the new DC cinematic universe. He has been cast as Guy Gardner, who will be in 2025’s Superman. However, there hasn’t been mention of him appearing in Lanterns
UPDATE: Only a few hours after Pierre’s casting was announced, Kyle Chandler was officially announced as the new Hal Jordan.

Who is John Stewart?
Like Jordan and Gardner, Stewart is a member of the Green Lantern Corps. He joined the ranks after Jordan, but he is not the last member of earth to join the intergalactic law enforcement group. Also, similar to Jordan, Stewart is ex-military.
Movie-goers have yet to see Stewart on the big screen. Although, Wayne T. Carr was cast as Stewart in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. But, Carr’s scenes were not used.
Who is Aaron Pierre?
Pierre burst on the scene with his recent movie, Rebel Ridge. Here’s the synopsis for that Netflix original:
A former Marine confronts corruption in a small town when local law enforcement unjustly seizes the bag of cash he needs to post his cousin’s bail.
Pierre crushed it in the Netflix ex-military role, causing the internet to clamor for his casting as Stewart.
Among his prior projects, Pierre was featured in the DC SyFy show, Krypton, which was set on Superman’s home planet in the era of Clark Kent’s grandfather.
When will we see Pierre as Green Lantern?
No date has been announced for Lanterns. However, we do know that Gunn’s DC reboot will begin in July 2025 with Superman.
Lanterns is set to be an HBO show. It’s been reported to have eight episodes.
Here’s the show’s logline:
The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Joker: Folie à Deux struggled at the box office, but just how badly? Take a look.
