Why the Panthers are a Good Bet to Cover the Spread vs. the Bears

The 1-3 Panthers travel to the 2-2 Bears on Sunday afternoon for an NFL Week 5 matchup. Let’s breakdown why I’m taking the points with Carolina.

Carolina Panthers +4 (-110) at Chicago Bears

1.5-units

Obviously, we can take the first two weeks and throw them out the window with the Panthers. Bryce Young was about as bad as it gets at quarterback, and a capable professional like Andy Dalton has shown that he can keep the Panthers competitive for as long as he’s at the helm. Dalton’s season got off to a hot start with a 36-22 victory over the Raiders, and while he lost a revenge game to the Bengals last week, Carolina still put up 24 points. Cincinnati was just in an absolute must-win situation, and the offense had been playing well since Week 2, so Joe Burrow was able to get 34 points on the board.

I’m expecting Dalton to continue to run a solid offense on Sunday in Chicago, but I highly doubt Caleb Williams can get this Bears offense humming at the same level. The Bears do have the advantage on defense in this game, as Chicago boats a top-10 defense. But I trust Dalton to be efficient and eliminate mistakes — he has completed over 65% of his passes for 539 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception in his two starts.

Meanwhile, Williams has shown the ability to really rush some decisions, leading to turnovers. The Bears are 2-0 in the games that their No. 1 pick hasn’t thrown an interception, but 0-2 in the other games, both of which Williams threw multiple picks. Believe it or not, only eight teams in the NFL have more takeaways so far this season than the Panthers.

Carolina is a solid team with Dalton under center, and I expect a strong performance from the team after the loss to the Bengals. The Bears just earned a win over a decimated Rams team, and should regress against a hungry team. Take the points with the Panthers.
