The PGA TOUR’s fall schedule rolls on this week after an exciting Presidents Cup. The Sanderson Farms is a fall staple event that has been hosted by the Country Club of Jackson since 2014. The venue is a 7,400-yard-plus par 72 that sits in a relatively flat parkland setting and has mostly straightforward routing, with few big doglegs or changes in elevation.
Jackson has some classic elements like pure Bermuda greens that are somewhat oversized and tree-lined fairways with oversized vegetation that can block lines to the green. However, the course isn’t overly tight, and as a result, players can wield their drivers quite a bit here, making power and solid off-the-tee play somewhat crucial to success.
Recent winners have included names like Cameron Champ, Luke List, and Sergio Garcia, who are all top-tier players with a driver in their hand and gained multiple strokes off the tee in the week of their win. From a Pick6 perspective, we should be emphasizing solid off-the-tee play, but also be looking at recent form, especially the results of the last fall event in September. While the venues from the first two fall events are somewhat different, the play this time of year tends to be a lot more about momentum than course fit, and any player who got in a quality start in Napa at the start of September will have a good shot at riding that momentum into a bigger week in Jackson.
Cham Kim Better Than 34.5 Finishing Position
With our initial batch of Pick6 projections this week all focused on four-day (TH to SUN) tournament lines, I’ll be hitting up these finishing position totals hard in this week’s article. My first and favorite play is taking Chan Kim to finish better than his current 34.5 total. Kim finished the regular season in great form, producing Top 12 finishes in three of his final four starts, and picked up right where he left off in Napa a few weeks ago, posting a T26 at the Procore Championship, an event where he gained 2.5 strokes on Approach and 2.6 strokes ATG.
While he’s far from an elite putter, Kim’s Tee to Green game is as good as anyone’s in the field right now and he comes in ranked eighth in strokes gained around the green stats over the last 24 rounds. As long as he’s not a complete disaster on the greens this week, he should push for another top-30 finish, and blow this total out of the water.
JJ Spaun Better Than 30.5 Finishing Position
Just like Kim, I love this spot for some more continuation from JJ Spaun, who has finished 26th or better in five of his last six PGA TOUR events. Spaun has been a beast tee to green over the last two months and comes into this week’s event having gained over 2.0 strokes off the tee in each of his last two starts.
An accurate driver, Spaun is going to find a lot of fairways and put himself in position on these four scoreable par 5’s which should not only give him a great shot at making another weekend but also put him in position to make a run at a top 10 on the weekend. While it’s hard to say when he’ll cool off, the weaker fields and easier courses in the fall make this a great time for Spaun to go after win number two, and I expect he’ll come into this week, ready to go and post us another top 25.
Jhonattan Vegas Worse Than 30.5 Finishing Position
Vegas posted a huge comeback win just a few starts ago in Minnesota when he won the 3M Open. The Venezuelan hasn’t necessarily played poorly since then, but there has been some regression in his iron play of late, as he’s failed to gain over 2.0 strokes on approach in each of his last three starts. Vegas is great off the tee but isn’t a player you can rely on to make up strokes on the greens, or around them, so if his irons are cooling off there could be a few more poor finishes in his future.
Add in the fact that Vegas is 1/3 here in terms of making cuts and this looks like the perfect time to sell high. He’s now finished outside the top 30 in three straight starts and seems likely to continue that trend this week.
Mackenzie Hughes Worse Than 29.5 Finishing Position
I saved Hughes for last because taking the “worse” on his 29.5 finishing total is my most speculative play. The Canadian finished inside the Top 4 in his last start in Napa in early September and has won this venue before, grabbing his second PGA win in Jackson back in 2022. However, while Hughes has shown some form of late, he’s also coming in off an emotionally draining Presidents Cup (his first ever) and is well-known to be a streaky player, who can be overly reliant on his putter at times.
I think there are a ton of variables with Hughes this week, many of which make him fadeable; including the fact he’s finished outside the top 30 at Jackson in two of his last three starts. With a busy travel schedule and a course that caters more to big hitters, I’m fine with including him in some lineups for a poor finish this week and hoping the Presidents Cup fatigue holds him back from another big finish in Jackson.
