Is Rico Dowdle finally RB1 for the Cowboys?

Updated:

By: Alex Hunter

Rico Dowdle saw more work than Ezekiel Elliott in Week 3 and that trend continued in Week 4. In the Cowboys’ win over the Giants last Thursday, Dowdle carried the ball 11 times and he caught his lone target, all while logging 44.6% of the snaps. Meanwhile, Elliot only carried the ball five times and he caught one pass, while logging a season-low 18% of the snaps.

With the expanded role in Week 4, Dowdle finished with 61 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, resulting in a season-best 13.1 FPTS.

Dowdle has now handled 61.3% of the Cowboys’ running back carries over the last two weeks, after he and Elliott were in a near-even split for the first two weeks of the season. Furthermore, Dowdle has garnered six targets on 37 routes over the last two weeks, while Elliot has seen three targets on 10 routes.

Dowdle is clearly Dallas’ top back right now and there is a chance that role continues to grow to the point that Elliott plays minimally.

If Dowdle is still available in your league and you need help at running back, the 26-year-old is an appealing option to pick up off waivers. There also might still be time to buy-low on the RB in deeper formats.
