After being in a near-split timeshare with Ezekiel Elliot for the first two weeks of the season, Rico Dowdle took on a larger role this past Sunday. In the loss to the Ravens, Dowdle out-carried Elliot 8-3. Dowdle logged a season-high 46.3% of the snaps and he also racked up five targets for the second straight week, while being targeted on 27% of his routes.
While the Cowboys trailing for the majority of this game might have had an effect on Dowdle’s usage, the back has seven more touches than Elliot this season overall and appears to have a slight edge over the ineffective veteran.
Dowdle should see double-digit touches for the third consecutive game Thursday vs. the Giants. And this is a positive matchup, with New York allowing the sixth most yards per rush in the league (5.0). Dallas is a 5.5-point favorite for this NFC East matchup, and they are a -105 favorite to score over 25.5 points on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
While Dowdle’s upside is somewhat limited due to Elliot’s lurking presence, Dowdle is in a great spot to have his best outing of the season Thursday. I expect an effort of double-digit fantasy points. While that isn’t overly exciting, Dowdle is a viable flex starter in 12-team leagues and deeper ones for Week 4.
