The 2024 Presidents Cup will take place this week in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will be a team event that features Team USA taking on the International Team. There will be 30 total matches (18 team, 12 singles) between the two teams that take place over four days.
Royal Montreal Golf Club will be the host course, and measures as a 7,279-yard par 70 with Bentgrass greens.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Patrick Cantlay Top Team USA Point Scorer (+650)
I really think there is value in this number due to the fact that Cantlay projects to team with World No. 2 Xander Schauffele for possibly all four team sessions on the week. The two played in three of the four team sessions back in the 2022 Presidents Cup, and then Cantlay played in all four team sessions at the 2023 Ryder Cup (Schauffele played three).
Since then, however, Schauffele has won two major championships, making it extremely unlikely he takes any sessions off this week. If these two play all four matches together, it’s quite possible they go 4-0 against a rather weak International Team. In 2022, Cantlay ranked fourth on Team USA in total points won, behind only Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Max Homa. Spieth and JT are not on this year’s team, and Homa has been absolutely lost for months now.
It will be a tall task to score more points than both Schauffele and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, but at +650 I will take my chances Cantlay shows up for his country this week.
Team USA Singles Day 4 Winner (-160)
There is simply too much top-end talent on Team USA to project they only win 61.5% of the time in this spot, which is what this -160 line implies. The bottom of the International Team could certainly compete with the bottom of Team USA, but it’s unlikely that Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa or Patrick Cantlay lose their matches.
The International Team then has to deal with Sam Burns, who is somewhat of a match-play specialist, having won the 2023 WGC Dell-Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club. We haven’t even brought up guys like Wyndham Clark, Tony Finau, Russell Henley or Sahith Theegala yet.
If the top four for the Red, White and Blue take care of business, the International Team would have to grab 6.5 of the remaining eight available points to win, which is extremely unlikely. Obviously the top dogs for Team USA all don’t have to win their individual matches, but they’ll all be favored to do so.
Back in 2022, Team USA won singles by the score of 6.5 to 5.5, and that was with Scottie Scheffler somehow losing to Sebastian Muñoz. That team also had Kevin Kisner on it, who is essentially one step from retirement these days. Factor all of that in and you’re looking at a decisive Team USA victory.
