Cowboys Team Breakdown
The Cowboys looked great in their Week 1 win over the Browns but have suffered back-to-back losses since then. They were dominated at home by the Saints and then effectively dominated by the Ravens last week as well. The Cowboys made a valiant fourth-quarter comeback to make the final score close but over the first three quarters, the Ravens were in total control on both sides of the ball.
Dallas is an easy team to predict. If they can get pressure on the quarterback, their defense will play well. They got pressure against Deshaun Watson in Week 1 and forced a lot of mistakes. They gave Derek Carr time in Week 2 and he picked them apart down the field. The Ravens decided not to mess with the pass rush at all and just ran the ball down their throat all game. Against top-tier offensive lines and top-tier rushing attacks, the Dallas defense will struggle.
On offense, it is the CeeDee Lamb show. The Cowboys have been unable to establish any sort of running game through the first three weeks of the season. TE Jake Ferguson had a good game against the Ravens, but no wide receiver has been able to establish themselves as a reliable WR2 alongside CeeDee Lamb. So, teams with an elite #1 cornerback that can shadow CeeDee Lamb and make other players beat them will have a lot of success. However, if Dak Prescott has time to throw and can get the ball to Lamb, their offense can run up a lot of points in a hurry.
Giants Team Breakdown
The Giants picked up their first win last week against the Browns. Other than basically giving away seven points by fumbling the opening kickoff, their defense played really well against Cleveland. However, the defense was picked apart by Sam Darnold and Jayden Daniels in their first two games. Those two quarterbacks combined to go 42/53 (79.2%) against the Giants’ defense. If they give Dak Prescott that kind of time and space, he will pick them apart just as effectively, if not even better.
On offense, the plan is simple for the Giants. They want to get the ball to Malik Nabers as many times as possible. Nabers is emerging as a star already and has combined for 18 catches, 205 yards, and three touchdowns over their past two games. If Daniel Jones has time in the pocket and can just be a game manager and force-feed the ball to Nabers, he can be a competent quarterback. However, if he is forced to go away from his first read and try to make a big play, he is susceptible to making huge mistakes. The Giants’ offensive line needs to protect him if they want to have success in this game.
Pick and Prediction
The Cowboys have won 13 of their last 14 games against the Giants, with the only loss coming in a Week 17 game with no consequences for the Cowboys. Dak Prescott has a ridiculous 25-8 (75.7%) ATS record as a favorite against NFC East teams. This is the perfect spot for the Cowboys to get right after back-to-back losses.
The Cowboys thrived in Week 1 against the Browns when their pass rush could get after Deshaun Watson. That allowed their cover guys on the back end to not have to hold up for very long. When they do have to hold up for a few seconds, that’s when you can beat their defense. Last week, Myles Garrett was all over Daniel Jones. Micah Parsons should be able to do that here as well. The Cowboys also really struggle against the run but the Giants’ rushing attack is not very formidable.
On offense, the Cowboys can be slowed down if you take away CeeDee Lamb and make their other receivers beat you. The Giants don’t have an elite corner that can shadow Lamb and take away his production so he should have a monster game here. The Cowboys beat the Giants by a combined score of 89-17 in their two games last year and it could be another blowout result in this game.
