On the entire Week 1 slate, the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions matchup had the highest total of 54 points. It was the only game with an Over/Under over 50 points. So, of course, the game ended up 20-20 after regulation and went into overtime.
But that doesn’t mean it was an offensive snore.
Jared Goff ($9,000 Showdown; 12.38 FPTS) connected with Jameson Williams ($5,400; 27.4 FPTS) for a 52-yard touchdown with 10:37 left in the third quarter to put Detroit up 17-3.
The Lions blitzed on the play but, per Next Gen Stats, Goff had 3.29 seconds to throw and Williams torched the one-on-one coverage for the easy pitch-and-catch.
Williams finished the night with five receptions on nine targets for 121 yards and a touchdown. He ran 28 routes on the night and also had one rush for 13 yards.
Later in the third period, the Rams offense finally woke up.
Kyren Williams ($8,000; 14.4 FPTS) punched one in from two yards out for the first touchdown of the night for Los Angeles.
Then it turned into the Cooper Kupp ($9,600; 35 FPTS) show. Kupp caught 14 of 21 targets for 110 yards and touchdown to put the Rams up by three with 4:35 left in the game.
The 21 targets were a career-high for Kupp, besting the 20 he received in a game back in 2020. The 14 receptions tied a career-high. For perspective, a player has received at least 20 targets in a game just 55 times in NFL history.
Unfortunately for the Rams, Kupp’s career game was partially due to a Puka Nacua ($9,800; 8.2 FPTS) injury, which forced him to leave the game in the second quarter.
After Kupp’s go-ahead score, the Lions tied the game with a field goal to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, the Lions pressed the “Smashmouth Football” button, running on eight of nine plays, culminating in the walk-off one-yard touchdown by David Montgomery ($6,600; 16.3 FPTS).
In the $1.5M Sunday Night Showdown tournament, Kupp was rostered in the CPT on 9.7% of teams and 45% in the FLEX. Williams was in the CPT slot on 8.5% of teams and 33.2% in the FLEX.
Amon-Ra St. Brown ($11,000; 4.3 FPTS) was in the CPT slot on 13% of teams and 63.6% in the FLEX. He disappointed with three receptions on five targets for 13 yards.
