Friday’s game between the Phillies and Marlins looked to be a mismatch before the first pitch was thrown. Philadelphia sits atop the NL East, while Miami is curled up in the cellar. Philadelphia had won five straight and 10 of the last 12.
Then, starting pitcher Edward Cabrera was a late scratch due to a migraine, thrusting Austin Kitchen ($4,000; -10.9 FPTS) into the starting role, and things went from bad to worse. Kitchen had appeared in three games and had thrown five major league innings entering Friday’s contest, allowing five earned runs.
In two innings, Kitchen got lit up for six earned runs on nine hits.
The Phillies scored three runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning. It was death by a thousand paper cuts as they scored on a single, another single, an infield single, another single and finally delivered the big blow with a two-run home run by Trea Turner ($5,800; 32 FPTS).
Miami finally responded with a RBI double in the fourth inning, then Philadelphia scored three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning. Instead of singles, they cashed in four doubles and a single, before Kyle Schwarber ($5,900; 27 FPTS) ended this barrage with a two-run home run.
Schwarber had two hits, three RBI and three runs. Turner had three hits, three RBI, three runs, a double and a walk. Bryce Harper ($5,400; 19 FPTS) also had three hits, two RBI, two runs and a double. Kody Clemens ($3,300; 17 FPTS) had three hits, an RBI, two runs and a double. Johan Rojas ($2,900; 25 FPTS) finished with three hits, two RBI, three runs and three doubles.
On the mound for the Phillies, Zack Wheeler ($10,000; 27.7 FPTS) dominated with seven strikeouts, a walk and allowing only one earned run on two hits in six innings of work.
In the $100K Relay Throw tournament, Harper was rostered on 7.9% of teams, Turner on 7.7%, Schwarber on 7.2%, Wheeler on 31.4% and Rojas on 3.1%.
