Jaguars Team Breakdown
The Jaguars were close to being very good on offense last season but had a lot of issues converting in the red zone. Trevor Lawrence has also been cursed by drops in his NFL career so far, but it was particularly bad last season. The Jaguars decided to make changes at wide receiver, letting Calvin Ridley go and signing Gabe Davis to play alongside Christian Kirk. They also drafted Brian Thomas Jr. from LSU in the first round of the NFL Draft. None of these guys are singularly as good as Ridley, but the Jaguars are hoping they will be an upgrade as a group.
Defensively, the Jaguars have some question marks. They signed DT Arik Armstead, safety Darnell Savage and CB Ronald Darby to help bolster their defense in the offseason. The Jaguars did bring in a new defensive coordinator this offseason, which was a bit of a confusing move considering they overperformed their talent on defense last season, finishing 10th in defensive DVOA.
Dolphins Team Breakdown
The Dolphins will once again have an electric offense. Mike McDaniel is one of the best play-callers in the NFL, and they return all of their elite skill position players from last season. This offense finished second in the NFL in offensive DVOA and third in scoring offense. I have no doubt about their ability to convert in the red zone and create big plays to get points on the board.
Just like with Jacksonville, the defense is where we don’t know what we’ll get. The Dolphins finished 19th in defensive DVOA last season but made some moves this offseason to try to fix that problem. They brought in Calais Campbell as an experienced pass rusher, Kendall Fuller at corner and Jordan Poyer at safety. They also brought Anthony Weaver from the Ravens’ staff as their new defensive coordinator. This could be an improved defense, but it might take some time to gel with new players in their new scheme.
Pick and Prediction
Both offenses in this game can put up points in a hurry. Meanwhile, both defenses are breaking in new systems with new defensive coordinators at the helm. Both offensive coaches like to get creative and should be excited to dip into their bag of tricks in the season’s first game. I see this game going over the total, as this could quickly turn into a shootout in Miami.
