The NFL’s rich just keep getting richer. ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced on Wednesday morning that Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II has reached an agreement to sign a four-year, $96 million extension. The deal also includes a whopping $77.5 million guaranteed, firmly cementing Surtain II as the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. ‘PS2’ still had two years and $23.3 million remaining on his rookie contract but Denver prioritized signing its best player and now has him locked up through the 2029 season.
Surtain II, the son of Patrick Surtain, who played in the NFL for both the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs from 1998 to 2008, immediately found himself in the spotlight after getting selected ninth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. At just 21 years old in his rookie season, he made an impact in the league, totaling four interceptions, 14 pass deflections and one pick-six. He has totaled just three interceptions across the last two seasons after totaling four his rookie season –– primarily because not many opposing quarterbacks dare to throw his way –– but he was a first-team All-Pro in 2022 as well as a Pro-Bowler in the same season and in 2023.
Now, the 23-year-old Alabama product finds himself as the highest-paid defensive back in history. This is fantastic news for Broncos fans, who now get to see Surtain hopefully become an even better player as he enters his prime years in what should be an all-around improved defense for Denver entering the new season. While Denver doesn’t necessarily figure to be too competitive this season –– holding +600 odds to make the playoffs on DraftKings Sportsbook –– things should be on the rise over there eventually with rookie quarterback Bo Nix set to lead the offense for years to come.
