The PGA TOUR heads to Memphis this week for the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the beginning of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. TPC Southwind will be the host, and measures as a 7,243-yard par 70 with Bermuda greens.
There will be no cut this week, and the field will consist of the top-70 players in the FedEx Cup standings, led by Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Co.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Tommy Fleetwood to win (+2200)
Fleetwood came oh so close to victory two weeks ago at the Paris Olympics, but a poor chip on the 17th hole ultimately did him in, and Scottie Scheffler added a gold medal to his already ridiculous 2024 mantle. The fact remains that Fleetwood played his heart out in France, gaining 6.6 strokes on approach and another 6.5 on the greens for the week.
Tommy Lad has yet to capture that first elusive PGA TOUR victory, but it’s absolutely going to happen soon, and this could be the week, as he’s played very well at TPC Southwind over the years. Last season, he finished T3 at this event, and was just one stroke from being in the playoff between Lucas Glover and Patrick Cantlay. Fleetwood also posted a T4 finish here back in 2019.
In a field of just 70, where about half the field is drawing dead to win, I will gladly take this 22/1 number on Fleetwood and hope he finally sleighs the dragon.
Justin Thomas to win (+4000)
We have not seen JT since The Open Championship, where he would post a middling T31 finish. Links golf has never really been his jam, and now that he’s back stateside on a course that’s treated him well in the past, I firmly expect him to be in contention this week. The last time Thomas played a PGA TOUR event in the U.S. was back at the Travelers in June, where he finished T5 and gained 4.8 strokes ball-striking and 7.0 from tee-to-green.
JT won this event by three strokes back in 2020 over a quartet of players, and ranks No. 1 in this field in SG: Tee-to-Green per round at TPC Southwind. The two-time major winner has played quite well at Signature Events in 2024, finishing T6 at Pebble Beach, T5 at the RBC Heritage, and of course the aforementioned T5 at the Travelers.
Thomas has always shown out at no-cut events throughout his career due to his proclivity to go nuclear in any particular round, and with some time off to rest, he should be raring to go to begin the playoffs this week. I have a hard time believing that a 16-time PGA TOUR winner (and former World No. 1) is simply never going to win again, so you can sign me up this week at 40/1.
