Ahead of Tuesday night’s MLB trade deadline, the Padres have acquired Marlins’ closer Scott and Bryan Hoeing in exchange for Robby Snelling, Adam Mazur, Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears, per MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola. With the Marlins sitting dead last in the NL East and Scott an unrestricted free agent this coming offseason, Scott was a common name in trade rumors. Adding him to an already strong Padres’ bullpen is a huge boost for the club’s chances in the postseason.
With an outstanding 1.18 ERA and 18 saves this season, Scott has been one of the best closers in baseball and, rightfully so, he was named to his first All-Star team. On top of the incredible ERA, Scott has also racked up 53 strikeouts in his 45 2/3 innings this season. Following this move, the Padres are an appealing bet to make the playoffs at -150 on the DraftKings Sportsbook and taking a chance on them to win the World Series at +3000 also has merit.
The Marlins received a large haul of players in return for Scott, most notably Snelling. The 20-year-old was a first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft and is promising prospect, who has posted a 3.56 ERA and produced 185 strikeouts in his 177.0 innings down in the minors over the last two years.
