One of college football’s marquee rivalries takes center stage on Saturday, as Miami travels to South Bend to take on Notre Dame.
Miami (8-0) enters at No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings, while Notre Dame (7-1) sits at No. 11 despite being ranked No. 4 in the AP poll. That CFP ranking came before Miami received difficult news: standout receiver Malachi Toney is expected to miss Saturday’s game and several more after suffering a high ankle sprain that is expected to require surgery.
There is hope that Toney could return for a potential College Football Playoff run, but Miami must get there first. Toney has caught 73 passes for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns, accounting for a massive portion of the Hurricanes’ passing production. His 13 receiving touchdowns represent nearly half of Miami’s 28 passing TDs, while his 1,027 receiving yards account for more than a third of the team’s 2,659 passing yards. His 19 red-zone targets also dwarf the rest of the offense; no other Miami player has more than five.
The Hurricanes defeated the Fighting Irish, 27-24, last season in Miami, which wound up having a major impact on the final rankings and kept the Irish out of the CFP. So it could be a delicious bit of irony if the Irish get a chance to return the favor this season and improve their chances at making the playoff in the process.
Here’s a look at some of the notable markets on DraftKings Predictions for the Hurricanes and Fighting Irish ahead of Saturday night’s showdown.
