Canadiens vs. Jets Betting Preview
Montreal Canadiens Outlook
Montreal has won five games in a row (all in regulation), and it has done so without its captain, Nick Suzuki, who hasn’t played since Oct. 20. Ivan Demidov has been on injured reserve since early October, too, and Mike Matheson is expected to miss about two weeks. Cole Caufield leads the club with eight goals, and Lane Hutson has totaled 13 points from the blue line.
The Canadiens have won games due to strong even-strength play, ranking sixth in 5v5 Corsi% (53.6%), which makes up for a power play that sits dead last in the NHL at 9.5%. Jacob Fowler has been the biggest reason for the club’s run, going 7-1-0 with a .932 SV%, 1.84 GAA and two shutouts, including a 46-save shutout against St. Louis on Oct. 27. His +9.8 GSAx and +2.16% SV% above expected rank second and third, respectively, among 74 goalies, and he stopped 33 of 34 shots when Montreal won 2-1 in Winnipeg on Oct. 25.
Winnipeg Jets Outlook
Winnipeg is on the opposite trajectory of Montreal, having lost five straight games, and the offense has all but disappeared during the skid. The Jets have scored just eight goals across those five outings, and their 29 high-danger shots on the season rank 28th in the NHL. Kyle Connor has accounted for 11 of the team’s 34 goals, and Mark Scheifele’s 10 assists lead the club, but there hasn’t been much depth support behind those two leaders.
Josh Morrissey has not played since Oct. 7 because of a lingering wrist injury, and Winnipeg has allowed 29.7 shots per game this season, the seventh-most in the league. Nico Daws will likely start between the pipes after stopping 33 of 37 shots in Friday’s loss in Florida. His -2.2 GSAx and -0.83% SV% above expected rank 53rd and 51st, respectively, among 74 goalies, with those numbers covering his time in New Jersey before the Connor Hellebuyck trade.
Canadiens vs. Jets Prediction and Best Bet
Montreal already beat Winnipeg in regulation nine days ago, and the Jets have lost each of their past five outings in 60 minutes while scoring a miserable 1.6 goals per game over that stretch. The -192 Moneyline is a bit too juiced for my liking, but backing the Canadiens to get it done in regulation at -115 is a much better number, especially with Fowler projected to be in net.
Best Bet: Canadiens 60 Min Line, Win In Regulation (-115)
