The PGA TOUR will be south of the border for a second straight week after last week’s VidantaWorld Mexico Open moved to the FedExCup Fall to consolidate the events. This week’s World Wide Technology Championship will take place at El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, at the southern tip of Baja California on the Pacific Coast. The event will begin Thursday, November 5, and conclude Sunday, November 8, weather permitting.
Let’s start the week with a look at the format, history and course for the World Wide Technology Championship.
World Wide Technology Championship Format
120 players start the week; the top 65 and ties will make the cut after Round 2. All four rounds will be played at El Cardonal Golf Course, which you can learn more about below.
This is the sixth of the eight FedExCup Fall tournaments. Winners of fall events earn the same benefits as regular-season events, including a two-year exemption on the PGA TOUR, 500 FedExCup points, and spots in THE PLAYERS, The Sentry, and the major championships that invite PGA TOUR winners.
At the end of The RSM Classic in just three weeks, the top 100 players in the final FedExCup standings will earn full status for the 2027 season. Players ranked No. 101-125 will generally have conditional status, while those who finish between Nos. 51-60 will earn entry into the first two Signature Events of 2027 through the Aon Next 10.
Plenty is at stake throughout the fall on the PGA TOUR, including this week’s visit to El Cardonal.
Tournament History
This tournament was the first official PGA TOUR event in Mexico, beginning in February of 2007. For the first 16 years, the tournament took place at Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula, before moving across the country to its current home in Los Cabos in 2023.
It was originally an alternate event, played the same week as the WGC-Match Play, but became a full event in 2013, when it moved to its current slot in the fall calendar. In that year, it was officially part of the 2014 season as part of the wraparound schedule.
In November of 2022, the Riviera Maya course that the event used was added to LIV Golf’s schedule, so the PGA TOUR left El Camaleón Golf Course and instead visited the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal golf course within the Diamante Cabo San Lucas resort, which has hosted the last three World Wide Technology Championships.
In 2023, Erik van Rooyen won the first event at this week’s venue with a score of -27. Austin Eckroat won the following year in 2024 with a -24 score, and last year, Ben Griffin finished with a tournament record -29.
This year, the event will have a $6 million purse, with $1.08 million as the winner’s share, matching each of the previous two weeks’ totals at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and the VidantaWorld Mexico Open.
Griffin is back to defend his title this year, and he has the second-shortest odds to win the event, behind only tournament favorite Ryan Gerard. Be sure to check back for this week’s full field and opening odds on DraftKings Sportsbook.
A Closer Look at the Course
The El Cardonal at Diamante golf course is the first Tiger Woods design to host a PGA TOUR event. The par-72 layout measures 7,452 yards and typically yields very low scores.
The course opened in 2014 and was the first course Woods’ TGR Design firm completed. It features wide-open fairways and a broad landscape dotted by cacti, palo verde trees and scrubby desert flora. The location at the tip of the Baja California peninsula offers a unique blend of encroaching desert and sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean.
The course also features some of the biggest greens in the regular PGA TOUR rotation, so hitting the green in regulation is usually easier than the PGA TOUR average. Like last week, the course is fully Platinum paspalum on both the fairways and the greens, and the resort-style setup has no rough.
