Flames vs. Kraken Betting Preview

Calgary Flames Outlook

Calgary’s goaltending picture changed quite a bit on Wednesday, when Devin Cooley was replaced after facing nine shots in a 4-0 loss in Edmonton. Cooley is now on injured reserve, and that’s a big blow for a team that won four straight home games with him in net, a run in which he allowed just six goals total. That puts Dustin Wolf back between the pipes for what would be his first start since Oct. 15, and the drop-off is rather steep. Cooley’s +2.2 GSAx ranks 22nd among 71 goalies, while Wolf’s -8.6 GSAx ranks 70th, meaning he has allowed 8.6 more goals than expected across six appearances. Wolf is 1-4-0 with an .839 SV% and 4.81 GAA, his -2.58% SV% above expected ranks 67th, and he has allowed four goals or more in four of his five starts, including six in each of Calgary’s two losses to Seattle earlier this month.

The Flames have also struggled to score, averaging just 2.33 goals per game (30th in the NHL), and Matvei Gridin leads the team with only four goals, while Joel Farabee (11) and Matt Coronato (10) are the only two players with double-digit points. Calgary does have a strong power play at 29.0% at least, ranking fifth in the league, and it has allowed the second-fewest high-danger shots this season. All 12 of its outings have been decided in regulation, too.

Seattle Kraken Outlook

Seattle’s results have outpaced its underlying numbers by a wide margin, to say the least. The Kraken rank fifth in the NHL at 3.69 goals per game, but their 2.80 xGoals per 60 rank 28th, and their 41.7% 5v5 Corsi% is the league’s worst. They’ve still gone 8-4-1, with six of those eight wins coming in regulation. Chandler Stephenson leads the team with 11 points, and Frederick Gaudreau has a team-high six goals with Jared McCann on injured reserve. The penalty kill is weak, ranking T-26th at 67.6%, which should play a big part tonight against Calgary’s fifth-ranked power play.

Joey Daccord is expected to start in net after going 3-3-0 with an .882 SV% and 3.95 GAA. His -2.0 GSAx (52nd among 71 goalies) and -0.50% SV% above expected (44th) are below average, and he’s coming off two rough outings against Florida and Minnesota, but he has handled Calgary, stopping 56 of 58 shots across his two starts against the club this season.

Flames vs. Kraken Prediction and Best Bet

I’m backing Seattle because of the goaltending gap: the Kraken scored six goals in both meetings with Wolf in net, while Calgary has scored one goal in each against Daccord, and Calgary hasn’t played a single game past regulation this season.

Best Bet: Kraken 60 Min Line, Win In Regulation (+140)
