The Minnesota Timberwolves have high expectations with a new-look roster, but their early-season success may already be derailed due to injury. On Tuesday afternoon, news broke that superstar Anthony Edwards is expected to miss up to two months due to an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee.
Edwards was listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game due to right knee injury management prior to the details of this procedure coming out. It’s worth noting that last season, he missed significant time down the stretch due to soreness and inflammation in that same knee. It clearly gave him some issues late in the year, which does perhaps contextualize the decision to undergo this procedure now.
Edwards was on a tear to begin the new season, averaging 33.3 points with 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists across his first four games. He was shooting 48.1% from the field and 40.0% from three, exploding for 45 points in the opener against the Miami Heat before scoring a season-high 47 points on Monday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now, his stellar start will be put on hold for the moment, putting a significant damper on the vibes in Minnesota.
The Timberwolves overhauled their roster this past offseason, shipping out Julius Randle and Naz Reid while adding star guard LaMelo Ball to complement Edwards in the backcourt. The early results were encouraging as the team won its first three games to start the campaign before falling to the Cavs in overtime on Monday. As things stand on Tuesday, the Wolves rank fourth in PPG and second in NETRTG.
Minnesota’s next game comes on Wednesday at home against the Golden State Warriors. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET.
