While guilty verdicts on fraud charges shroud Manchester City in controversy, the Sky Blues have continued to dominate on the pitch, sitting atop the Premier League table on 18 points. Among teams in top five leagues, only Man City and Barcelona have yet to drop points.
The Sky Blues will put their perfect record on the line at 10 a.m. ET (3 p.m. local) with a home match against Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys were uncompetitive in their last attempt at the Premier League, but they look capable of staying up this time around.
Man City is a -425 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook to claim all three points, and Ipswich Town is +950. A draw is available at +600.
Below, I’ll break down this David vs. Goliath showdown and provide my favorite bet.
Manchester City vs. Ipswich Town Best Bet:
- Manchester City to Win Both Halves (+130): Although they might rotate their squad after losing in the Champions League to Paris Saint-Germain, the Sky Blues are still expected to start Erling Haaland up top, and he alone is a near-guarantee to take advantage of the Tractor Boys’ shaky back line. Ipswich forces enough mistakes and generates enough shots to score, but a 3-1 result (2-1 for City in the first half, 1-0 in the second) sounds about right.
Manchester City vs. Ipswich Town prediction, pick
In 2024/25, these teams finished on nearly opposite ends of the table, as the Sky Blues came third and the Tractor Boys finished in 19th, 16 points below safety. This season, Manchester City has a perfect record in England since the Community Shield, winning each of its Premier League matches (four by multiple goals) and advancing over Norwich City in the EFL Cup, although it enters on a sour note after losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the UCL. Ipswich has achieved nearly half of its 2024/25 point total (22) already, as it sits on nine points in 10th after turning it around late to beat Fulham in Matchweek 6. The Tractor Boys have still taken the occasional battering, losing 5-2 to Manchester United and 4-2 to Arsenal in the EFL Cup, but thanks to their strong performance and Man City’s financial scandal, their relegation odds (+200) are longer than the Sky Blues’ (+170).
In what should be a surprise to nobody, Manchester City’s leading man, Erling Haaland, has been the Premier League’s top scorer through the first six weeks of the season, smashing home six goals. Rayan Cherki (four goals and two assists), Antoine Semenyo (three goals and two assists), and Joško Gvardiol (one goal, three assists) all have at least four goal contributions of their own. All in all, the Sky Blues rank second in both goals and expected goals (both behind Brighton). They’ve converted their shots into goals at the highest rate and, despite losing talisman Rodri over the summer, have been the best and most aggressive passing team in England. Defensively, Manchester City has been nearly as dominant, tying for the fewest goals conceded from the fifth-fewest xG, the eighth-fewest shots on target. While it has lost a slight majority of its ground duels and been among the worst teams at defending set pieces, it has won aerial duels at the second-highest rate, with Matheus Nunes, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Marc Guéhi all in the top 25 individually. The Sky Blues have done an excellent job keeping opponents out of the box, forcing long shots, and Gianluigi Donnarumma leads the Premier League in goals prevented.
Ipswich Town’s investments in remaking its front line in the summer have paid off so far. The Tractor Boys had the league’s third-highest net spend in the offseason, but so far, Emersonn (tied for the team lead with two goals), Julio Encisco (two assists), Abdul Fatawu (one assist), and Abdoul Ouattara (one goal) have all made significant contributions. Ipswich has had a top-half attack in the Premier League so far, scoring the seventh-most goals, managing the ninth-most shots, and the 11th-most expected goals despite not being very efficient from set pieces. Unlike the other newly-promoted sides, the Tractor Boys have also been pretty solid with their passes. However, their leaky defense has let them down, as they’ve given up the third-most xG, the fourth-most shots and shots on target, and they’ve won both ground and aerial duels at among the lowest rates. Ipswich has been active in the passing lanes and has forced the second-most high turnovers ending in a shot, but it just hasn’t had enough back line depth besides new signing Issa Diop. I’m not a big believer in goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, who ranks fifth-to-last in the division in goals prevented.
In the end, I expect the Tractor Boys to stay up this time around, as their attack has too much talent, from Emersonn to Exequiel Palacios to Celtic’s 2025/26 title hero Daizen Maeda. However, Manchester City away is a game in which even the best sides take licks, and Ipswich Town simply gives away too many shots in order to expect the Sky Blues not to take advantage. Even if it rotates its squad somewhat, Manchester City could have more depth in the attack than any other team in England, and it’ll hardly miss a beat. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Tractor Boys got on the score sheet, as they’ve actually scored at least two goals in six of their eight matches in all competitions, but this has 3-1 or 4-1 written all over it.
