Syracuse Orange vs. Virginia Cavaliers pick, prediction for College Football Week 6 on Saturday 10/10/26

An ACC showdown is on tap tonight in Charlottesville. Syracuse (2-2, 0-2) earned a much-needed 42-41 win in overtime last weekend over UConn. However, Fran Brown’s crew will need to be even better tonight on the road. As for Virginia (3-2, 1-1), Saturday’s matchup presents an opportunity to build some distance from the bottom of the conference. For a Cavaliers group that’s lost two of its last three games, picking up a win in Week 6 is crucial.

The Cavaliers are listed as ten-point favorites over the Orange, with the total set at O/U 50.5 points. Below is my full preview, prediction and best bet for Saturday’s Syracuse vs. Virginia Week 6 matchup.

Syracuse vs. Virginia prediction, preview

To call this a rocky start for the Orange would be putting it kindly. A second half collapse against Cal in Week 2 was followed up by a deflating loss to rival Pittsburgh just five days later. However, Syracuse managed to bounce back against UConn, eking out an overtime victory. Still, today’s contest presents a significant step up in difficulty. Amari Odom accounted for six touchdowns in last week’s overtime victory over UConn, but he was downgraded to doubtful Friday because of a shoulder injury. Steve Angeli has also been ruled out, leaving former five-star recruit Malachi Nelson as Syracuse’s expected starting quarterback against Virginia. Nelson, who transferred from UTEP, would become the Orange’s third different starting quarterback this season.

Head coach Tony Elliott has built one of college football’s most underrated defensive units. Virginia is allowing just 290.4 yards per game, fourth-best in the ACC. Keep in mind, UVA ranked third in that category last season; this is no fluke. Where this group excels is in its back seven; opposing passers are averaging just 140.8 yards per game. To boot, the Cavaliers have only given up two touchdowns while snagging seven interceptions. Granted, this team surrendered over 400 yards in losses to West Virginia and Florida State. Regardless, those two games came on the road. A knack for forcing turnovers could make all the difference tonight.

For all their stinginess on defense, Virginia needs to put up some points of its own. The offense has been hit and miss, showing flashes of greatness but struggling to remain consistent. Through four games, the team ranks 11th in the conference in yards per game (398.8) and tenth in points per game (33.8). Keep in mind, blowout wins over Norfolk State and Delaware have helped boost those numbers. Beau Pribula has done a solid job under center, throwing for 961 yards and 12 touchdowns while giving up one interception. On the flip side, the running game hasn’t been great. The Cavaliers are averaging 3.79 yards per rush attempt, third-worst in the ACC.

Even if there isn’t much of a ground presence, UVA should find a way to move the ball tonight. Syracuse’s defense has shown signs of improvement, but this is still a work in progress. Look no further than last week’s game, in which UConn’s Kalieb Osborne threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. Most troubling, SU has snagged just seven interceptions since the start of 2025. That inability to make big plays is a mirror opposite of Virginia. It’s not as if Pribula coughs up many turnovers, either. Another advantage for the Cavaliers is that they have options. Four different members of the roster have notched over 100 receiving yards.

Best Bet: Virginia -9.5 (-122)

The Cavaliers are far from a perfect squad. Still, Pribula’s accurate play under center gives this group a shot against most ACC opponents. That’s without mentioning Elliott’s stingy defense, which could carry UVA to a win on its own. Syracuse is an inconsistent offense under normal circumstances, not accounting for its current quarterback injuries. It’s difficult to trust the Orange on the road this evening against a capable conference foe.
