Who Was Voted Out On Survivor Tonight? Episode 3 Recap

Updated:

By: Bryan Armetta

Two weeks into Survivor 51, and it’s already a chaotic mess. In Episode 1, we saw a live tribal leading to a good old fashioned blindside. Episode 2 was far stranger, with another blindside, shot in the darks being leveraged, and an attempt from Rob to write down his own name. Keeping all that in mind, it’s safe to say the Open Era has gotten off to an entertaining start.

So, what’s next for our 19 remaining castaways? Below, we’ll recap all the twists and turns from Wednesday’s third episode, titled “What I’m Smellin’ Is Stinky”, along with revealing who was voted out.

Survivor 51 Episode 3 Recap

Rob on the Rocks

The most divisive player on Savu has lived to see another day. Ana got blindsided in Episode 2, keeping Eric around as a result. The vote sent plenty of his castaways into a state of shock. That’s especially true for Carter, who referred to himself as the “worst” Survivor player in camp. Ori seems to think his Helicopter Alliance remains strong with Sharonda, despite voting for a different person.

It’s a whole different story for Rob, who attempted to fall on the sword for Eric. It was a disastrous move on multiple levels, including a futile attempt to vote for himself. To make matters worse, an accident in the ocean has left Rob’s foot in a state of pain. As a result, he’s pondering whether to stay in the game.

Eric comes over to comfort Rob, although he’s taking what his fellow Rhode Islander says with a grain of salt. After last week’s chaos, it’s hard to take his word seriously. Players such as Alexis and Ori are expressing some doubt, claiming it’s more a result of the vote rather than a sudden, unexpected injury.

Jeff and medic Dr. Barry come over to talk it over, with the former wondering why Rob never mentioned anything during Tribal Council. The latter doesn’t see anything too concerning, but he’s not going to rule out a potential infection. That’s enough to scare Rob, who doesn’t want to risk it. Jeff is adamant to Savu that their tribemate isn’t being pulled from the game; this isn’t a life-threatening situation. Regardless, a tearful Rob says his goodbyes to the tribe; his time on Survivor 51 is over.

Right before Rob leaves Fiji for good, he gives Carter his hidden immunity idol. It’s a massive move in the game, giving the current underdogs on Savu some ammunition going forward. Already down two players, it wouldn’t be a shock to see this group hit Tribal Council for the second day in a row.

Devin Drags Kilby

Tree mail offers up an intriguing new twist: one player from each tribe will travel to the other camp. Off of a random vote, Carter is sent to Toka. On the other hand, Devin immediately volunteers himself over to Savu.

Still, this is Survivor; there’s always another layer to the game. Both players are told there is an advantage hidden at the other camp. However, that’s not all. Carter and Devin are also given the chance to mutiny and join their new tribe.

Unsurprisingly, Devin immediately spills the beans on everything. He informs Savu about all of the internal politics at Toka, along with their opportunity to swap tribes. In the process, he pains a massive target on Jenna’s back. However, the dismal state of camp eliminates his desire to switch tribes. During a one on one with Sharonda, Devin informs her that there’s an advantage hidden inside the ladle at the water well. It’s a massive show of trust, re-solidifying the Helicopter Alliance. The two eventually get the job done, uncovering a secret extra vote.

It doesn’t stop there for Devin. He decides to “smear” Kilby’s name, given the two have had some difficulty working together at Toka. Devin believes in weaponized honesty, which seems like a slightly nicer version of talking trash. As one last act, Devin tells Ori that he and Sharonda found the advantage. It’s a move that shows the three can work together as allies going forward.

Chaotic Carter

It’s a different story for Carter, who now has an opportunity to snag a second advantage. Even more promising, he can start his game fresh with a brand new tribe. He reveals the results of the Eric vote to Toka, naming Linnea and Sharonda as the heads of a majority alliance.

Lewis is a bit suspicious, wondering if Carter is hiding something. He and several other members of the tribe decide to take matters into their own hands. They open his backpack and find an envelope, unveiling the advantage’s location inside one of the tribe oars. Then, in a matter of seconds, Brady and Maggie run to the boat. The latter wants the advantage to herself, even though Brady chopped the oar and snag an extra vote. She manages to persuade him, agreeing to vote alongside the majority alliance going forward.

When Carter is close to leaving, he’s forced to make a decision: stay at Toka or head back to his old tribe. Brady sees a potential long-term ally, so he decides to ask if the newbie “came with anything to camp.” However, it’s a pointless move; Carter won’t budge. Still, Brady doesn’t hold it against him; he’d do the same if the roles were reversed. Carter doesn’t know how much to read into their relationship, wondering if it’s legitimate or a bluff.

Before Carter can return to Savu, he makes a last-minute scramble to find his now-taken advantage. In the process, he’s keeping a suddenly impatient boat driver waiting. After an extended delay, Carter’s ship literally sails; he’s forced to stay on Toka.

Anchors Away

This week’s immunity challenge puts Savu at a three-player disadvantage. Still, unofficial leader Ori doesn’t seem too daunted. Players will be tasked with crawling through a pile of wood shavings, collecting keys. Then, two players will unlock chains wrapped around a crate. Inside, there’s a ladder that can be used to climb to the top of a platform. There, they’ll use two hooks to hoist up a heay bag of coconuts. Then, players will grab a key and lead their tribe over a steep wall. On the other side, tribes will unlock and attempt to solve an anchor-shaped puzzle. As an added bonus, egg-laying hens are up for grabs as a reward.

After a crazy scrum through the wood shavings, the tribes are virtually tied during the unlocking portion of the challenge. New recruit Carter makes a strong first impression for Toka as well, giving his group an early lead. Savu responds well during the bag lifting segment, bringing us back to a dead heat.

Then, we get to a Survivor classic: the human ladder. This is a true test of teamwork, and Toka passes with flying colors. It’s none other than Brady at the bottom, lifting his tribe mates to the top. In a matter of minutes, he and Devin make their way atop the ladder. It’s a different story for Savu, mired in what Jeff calls a “disaster.” However, Toka shifts momentum once again with a disastrous showing on the puzzle from Jenna and Thien An. By the time all of Savu is at the top, their opponents have barely connected any puzzle pieces.

Christian and Kristin are the exact opposite for Savu, putting together the pieces with relative ease. Just like that, the favorites have now become underdogs. Savu doesn’t stop, absolutely rolling during the puzzle portion of the challenge. In a shocking turn of events, Toka will be headed to their second Tribal Council of the season.

New Targets on Toka

Jenna attempts to do some damage control, apologizing for her performance at the puzzle. Brady gives her credit for putting herself up on the line. Kilby is frustrated, since Devin wouldn’t let him take part in the puzzle at the end of the challenge. The two have a frank discussion. Kilby claims Devin is talking behind his back, and says it’s been confirmed by Brady, Patt and Jelly. Devin takes that information back to his allies, who are convinced its time to take Kilby out. Jelly thinks it should be an easy vote, but she also said that before the Aaliyah blindside.

However, they aren’t the only people voting on this tribe. Lewis believes he and Carter will be the swing votes, since they haven’t made a vote on Toka yet. Carter thinks Devin is running the show, and doesn’t intend to play along with his game. Still, it’s a very early point in the game to put a target on your back.

Elsewhere on the tribe, Maggie tells Kilby she’s fine working with Devin, partially since he has the numbers. Kilby thinks differently, believing Brady isn’t as committed to the majority alliance. However, a better target might be Mike. He’s what Kilby calls the “plus one”; his vote out won’t bother anyone too much. However, Brady isn’t trusting Kilby at all, seeing himself as in charge of this vote.

Still, all plans have a downside. Brady loops in Lewis, telling him that the plan is to blindside Kilby. However, the Irishman has plans of his own; he doesn’t watch Survivor just to watch a majority alliance dominate. Thien An has plans of her own: get out Patt, a more dangerous player compared to Mike. It’s a convincing argument, seemingly bringing aboard several members of this new ‘misfit’ alliance. However, Thien An makes the mistake of telling Brady, who says that her plan is “not going to work” during his confessional. His group is larger and going to vote for Kilby…or so it seems. This evening’s vote still comes down to whatever Carter and Lewis deem best for their games.

Another Unpredictable Tribal Council

As always, suspicion abounds at Tribal Council. Kilby whispers to Brady, asking if he’s good for their ‘plan’. The latter gives him false reassurance, hoping to deliver another blindside. As for Mike, he tells Jelly that “we have Carter.” It’s clear that the prominent group of five feels good about their chances during this vote. In predictably blunt fashion, Devin compares the Toka tribe to a “castle built on sand.”

The vote starts off as expected: five votes for Kilby, four votes for Patt. However, in another massive twist, the last two votes on the tribe go towards Patt. Carter and Lewis have opted to shake things up, siding with the underdog group of four. For the second time in two votes, a Devin-led alliance has seen its plans thwarted at Tribal Council.
