NFL Week 4 Pick’Em Pool Picks, Predictions and Strategy
Here are my five favorite selections to use this week in NFL against-the-spread pools.
Week 4 Picks
Cardinals -1.5 at Giants — The Giants’ season is going down the drain at a rapid pace, despite their 2-1 record. Jaxson Dart and Brian Burns both look like they are done for the season. Jameis Winston has been really poor since stepping in at quarterback. Winston ranks 33rd out of 34 eligible quarterbacks in both EPA/dropback and success rate, only because of Cooper Rush’s historically bad play. The Giants traded for J.J. McCarthy, but Winston will be starting another week as McCarthy learns the offense. The Giants’ defense will also not be the same without Brian Burns.
The Cardinals have played well in two of their three games this season. They got a nice win over the Chargers in Week 1, were outclassed by the champions in Week 2, and then played the 49ers down to the wire in Week 3. The Arizona offense ranks 12th in EPA/play and 10th in success rate. They should be able to move it against the Giants, who rank 27th in defensive EPA/play. These are two bad defenses, but I trust Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals offense much more than I do Jameis Winston and the Giants offense.
Jets +3.5 at Bears — The Jets will be a frustrating team to play against all season. They proved that they are better than the bottom-tier teams in the league by dominating the Titans in Week 1. In Week 2, they blew a late lead and ended up losing in overtime against the Packers. In Week 3, they went on the road to Detroit and took the Lions down to the wire, losing on a Lions’ touchdown in the final 3 minutes of the game. Geno Smith has looked much more like the solid veteran quarterback he was in Seattle than his dismal season in Las Vegas. Smith ranks 12th among eligible quarterbacks in adjusted EPA/play this season.
The Bears looked great in their first game with Case Keenum at quarterback. Now, it will either be Keenum or Tyson Bagent at quarterback this week against the Jets. The Jets will now have tape to study on how the Chicago offense operates with both quarterbacks. They should be much better prepared than the Philadelphia defense was. New York ranks 14th in defensive EPA/play and should limit the explosives, keeping this game close.
49ers -2.5 vs. Broncos — The 49ers’ offense looks like a juggernaut to start the season. Brock Purdy leads all quarterbacks in both success rate and adj. EPA/play. Meanwhile, the Denver defense has not played like the elite unit we’ve seen the last couple of seasons. They rank 21st in defensive EPA/play, largely because they rank dead last in defensive EPA/rush. That is bad news against Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers.
The Broncos’ defense only gave up 26+ points in regulation four times all of last season. They have already done that twice in three games this season. This defense might finally be regressing some after years of dominance, and now they need to face the best defense in the NFL.
The San Francisco defense has been around league average this season, ranking 16th in EPA/play. They aren’t a great unit, but they should be able to contain Bo Nix and the Broncos, who rank 22nd in offensive EPA/play. The Broncos got a great win over the Rams last week, but they were significantly outplayed in that game. They were incredibly fortunate to win that game and should get bitten by the regression bug in San Francisco.
Raiders +4.5 vs. Chiefs — The Raiders are off to a flying start to the Klint Kubiak era, with a 3-0 record. They are tied with the Chiefs at the top of the AFC West and now have a home game against Kansas City with first place on the line. The Raiders should rise to the occasion and at least keep it close. The Raiders’ defense has been incredible, ranking second in EPA/play and first in EPA/dropback this season. Raiders DC Robert Leonard has been on this staff since 2023 and is familiar with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s offense. He has done an excellent job so far and should keep the Chiefs in check.
Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins has done a really solid job of managing this offense. He ranks 11th among eligible quarterbacks in adj. EPA/play and 10th in success rate. Cousins should be able to create enough offense to keep the Raiders in this game. It should be a lower-scoring defensive battle between these two division rivals, with the Raiders keeping it within the number.
Falcons +2.5 at Saints — The Falcons looked fantastic last week against the Packers, and now have extended rest ahead of this matchup with the Saints. After shaking off the cobwebs in the first quarter, Michael Penix Jr. looked great in the final three quarters against the Packers. The Falcons have the league’s best running back and a top-10 wide receiver. All they need is someone to distribute the ball to those players and command enough respect from opposing defenses to keep them honest. Penix ranked fourth among all quarterbacks in adj. EPA/play and first in success rate last week.
As an offense, Atlanta ranked second in EPA/play and first in success rate last week. If Penix can avoid mistakes, this offense will be tough for anyone to contain this season. The New Orleans defense ranks 23rd in EPA/play and 31st in success rate. Atlanta should be able to control the clock and get points on the board in this one. The Atlanta defense has also been excellent, ranking eighth in the NFL in EPA/play and third in success rate. The Falcons should win this game outright.
