Ben Johnson still has D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai running behind Chicago’s formidable interior line, even as Caleb Williams’ hamstring injury strips away the offense’s most improvisational (and, indeed, generational) talent. Case Keenum is expected to start after handling the first-team preparation; Tyson Bagent has cleared concussion protocol. Philadelphia must knock those backs off schedule, because asking Keenum to repeatedly convert third-and-long against Vic Fangio’s secondary would make for a punishing return to the starting lineup. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for this week’s NFL game between the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Bears vs. Eagles prediction, preview
Through two games, the Eagles ranked a disappointing 25th in both rush EPA allowed and rushing success rate allowed, despite opening against Washington and Tennessee. Swift and Monangai have already combined for 316 rushing yards, with Monangai squeezing 47 from 10 carries during that miserable afternoon against Minnesota. Chicago reached the red zone three times in the rain and somehow collected zero points from those possessions. I expect better finishing tonight.
Philadelphia has required far too much late-down brilliance from Jalen Hurts. Across the opening two games, the Eagles managed a dreadful 31.5% early-down success rate, then surged to 60.6% on late downs. Against Tennessee, Philadelphia converted 11 of 18 third downs, yet still needed its winning touchdown with nine seconds remaining. I love the throws Hurts and DeVonta Smith keep completing in those situations; I’m considerably less enthusiastic about projecting another 61.1% third-down afternoon.
Saquon Barkley’s return complicates that skepticism, and rightly so. He carries no injury designation, but the Eagles still need Drew Kendall at center and Cam Jurgens at left guard to establish better timing following Landon Dickerson’s injury. Philadelphia entered the weekend 24th in EPA/rush. With Dallas Goedert unavailable, Sean Mannion also loses an experienced receiving threat and blocker while trying to repair those wasteful early downs.
Eagles vs. Bears pick, best bet
Slim Reaper, really, is your most persuasive passing-game argument for Philadelphia pulling away. He earned 13 targets and 188 air yards against Tennessee, catching 10 passes for 117 yards; Chicago’s nine points allowed against a rain-hampered Minnesota offense hardly establishes a defense capable of containing him. The Bears must sustain their rushing possessions, because Keenum trading downfield completions with Hurts would trouble me considerably.
I still prefer Chicago catching more than a field goal. Johnson can attack Philadelphia’s vulnerable run defense, and the Eagles haven’t established the down-to-down efficiency I want from a road favorite. Give me a competitive, run-heavy Bears effort, with Hurts producing just enough late to win.
