He was the runner-up in the spring race, but his 78 laps led made him the all-time leader in laps led at Kansas. This makes sense. Kansas, like Las Vegas, has progressive banking. The groove moves, and Larson loves to groove. He is the greatest dirt-track racer ever. His expertise is identifying the fastest way around a track as the rubber lays down.
Christopher Bell | Finishing Position: 5.5

Three of his last five starts at this track have come from the pole. Sunday makes it a fourth strong starting spot. He’ll roll off third after Saturday’s qualifying session got rained out. Four of those same five races ended in the top 10. Only a rough 20th-place run this spring interrupted an otherwise clean stretch at his home track. That run wasn’t rough. Bell was in fourth on lap 265 of the scheduled 267, but a late caution and restart didn’t go his way.
Kansas is where he grew up racing, and the results back up the sentimental angle for the Okie. Eight starts on 1.5-mile tracks this season have already produced one win and 288 points, a total that puts him firmly in the championship conversation heading into the fourth Chase race.
Narrative aside, the JGR Toyotas are the class of the field. This is this year. Only Kyle Larson can play spoiler. Bell struggled to win this season, but he doesn’t need to win. His runner-up runs get it done.
