Best Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups and Adds for Week 4

One key factor to keep a close eye on every week is new injuries. Here are some new situations to monitor moving forward:

Players with new injuries from Week 3 to watch:

  • QB Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers
  • QB Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • QB Marcus Mariota, Washington Commanders
  • RB De’Von Achane, Miami Dolphins
  • RB Breece Hall, New York Jets
  • RB Rachaad White, Washington Commanders
  • RB Travis Etienne Jr., New Orleans Saints
  • RB Tyjae Spears, Tennessee Titans
  • RB Ollie Gordon II, Miami Dolphins
  • WR Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings
  • WR Garrett Wilson, New York Jets
  • WR Jalen Coker, Carolina Panthers
  • WR Jack Bech, Las Vegas Raiders
  • WR Jalen McMillan, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • TE Kenyon Sadiq, New York Jets
  • TE Mike Gesicki, Cincinnati Bengals

With those injuries in mind, here are some of my early names to watch if you’re shopping on the Week 4 waiver wire.

WR Roman Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers only scored three points in New England last week, but they bounced back in a big way, defeating the previously undefeated Bengals, 30-27. Aaron Rodgers (23.68 FPTS) threw for almost 300 yards and three touchdowns, showing he still has plenty in the tank to carry the workload when called upon.

Even with Michael Pittman Jr. (3.6 FPTS) back from his foot injury, Roman Wilson (13.6 FPTS) stayed very involved as one of Rodgers’ top targets. This week, the 25-year-old from Michigan finished with three catches on six targets for 60 yards and his first touchdown of the season.

Wilson has gotten exactly six targets in each of the first three games this season. He has at least three catches in each game, producing 26, 28 and 60 yards.

While Pittman and DK Metcalf (12.1 FPTS) will likely continue to be the team’s top two receivers, Wilson is also getting enough work to be a viable option, especially for the next two weeks against the Browns and the Colts, who rank in the top 10 in fantasy points allowed to WR. Wilson is almost universally available but is developing a strong connection with Rodgers.

Other available receivers with splashy Week 3 performances to watch include Jakobi Meyers (19.4 FPTS), Keenan Allen (18.3 FPTS) and Mack Hollins (14.7 FPTS).

RB Ollie Gordon II, Miami Dolphins

At running back, the big situation to watch from the waiver wire Week 4 is the situation in Miami. Superstar De’Von Achane (1.7 FPTS) went down with an injury in the first quarter and could be out long-term, according to what coach Jeff Hafley said after the game.

With Achane out and Jaylen Wright (foot) inactive, second-year RB Ollie Gordon II (14.5 FPTS) had a chance to step up as the team’s primary running back. He finished the game with 17 carries for 41 yards and added three catches on three targets for 14 more yards. He got into the end zone late in the first quarter.

Gordon did have to leave the game and get an IV due to some cramping late in the game, but he was able to return. Both he and Wright will have potential upside if Achane is out for a while, but since he is the healthier option, he’s the preferred pickup at this point. He’s almost universally available since he didn’t have much of a role before Achane’s injury, but he could be the starting running back going forward.

In another important running back injury to watch, Breece Hall (8.5 FPTS) also left the game early with a thigh injury. If he’s limited or out at all, Braelon Allen (4.7 FPTS) would be a very strong addition. Other running backs who deserve a look include Brian Robinson Jr. (11 FPTS), George Holani (10.8 FPTS) and Ty Johnson (9 FPTS).

QB Geno Smith, New York Jets

While Tyler Shough (28.8 FPTS) continues to emerge as a great option for the up-tempo Saints, Geno Smith (30.04 FPTS) has also gotten off to a great start in his return to the Jets. In Week 3, he had an excellent game in a favorable matchup against the Lions, and he has more favorable spots coming up soon on his schedule.

In Week 3, Smith completed 31-of-37 pass attempts for 321 passing yards, three touchdowns, and a two-point conversion. He worked very well with Garrett Wilson (29.7 FPTS), and the passing game may need to carry even more of the workload if Breece Hall misses any time.

In three of the next four weeks, Smith plays a defense that ranks in the top 10 in FPTS allowed to QBs. He’ll face the Bears on a short week next Sunday before coming home in Week 5 to host the Browns. He’ll visit New England in Week 6 before a very favorable matchup in Week 7 against the Dolphins.

If you need a short-term fill-in, Smith definitely makes sense for the next few weeks before his schedule gets tougher. If you want a longer-term solution, Deshaun Watson (20.26 FPTS) and Marcus Mariota (20.42 FPTS) are worth a look, while Michael Penix Jr. (14.04 FPTS) looked strong in his return on Thursday Night Football.

TE Kenyon Sadiq, New York Jets

Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq (26.5 FPTS) helped Smith’s big game with an impressive touchdown catch of his own:

Sadiq was a little shaken up on the play, but he returned later in the game and put together an impressive breakout performance with seven catches for 105 yards and that touchdown. Adonai Mitchell (finger) and Mason Taylor (thumb) were out for this matchup, which opened up targets, but his big performance likely earned him a larger role even when they are back.

Other options from the waiver wire Week 4 at tight end that could make nice pickups include Noah Fant (19.3 FPTS), who had two touchdowns for the Saints, AJ Barner (11.9 FPTS) of the Seahawks, and Cade Otton (8.6 FPTS) of the Bucs.

Bills DST

The Bills DST (5 FPTS) had two sacks and a key interception in their home win over the Chargers. They gave up 10 points in the first quarter, but then they were able to hold the Chargers out of the end zone the rest of the game.

In their three wins to start the season, the Bills have forced three turnovers, and they have multiple sacks in each game. They have allowed lots of points, but they’ve come up with big plays as well. Next week, they have a favorable matchup against the turnover-prone Patriots at home at Highmark Stadium.

The Jaguars DST (16 FPTS) had a big week against the Pats in Week 3, but they’ll have to take on the Bengals next week. The Commanders DST (11 FPTS) got a huge win over the Seahawks, and next week, they’ll host the Colts in a favorable matchup as well.
