Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies prediction, pick for Friday 9/25/26

The final week of the MLB season is here, and the playoff picture is finally almost settled. Five of the six teams in both leagues have clinched their spots in the postseason.

In the NL, the Philadelphia Phillies could officially lock up their spot tonight. Philadelphia currently holds a two-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final Wild Card spot, and although the Diamondbacks hold the tiebreaker, a Phillies win over the Tampa Bay Rays and an Arizona defeat against the San Diego Padres could officially vault Philadelphia into the postseason. Because the Phillies swept the season series against the Padres, they could still climb as high as the fourth seed.

Tonight’s clash is set to begin at 6:40 p.m. ET. Freddy Peralta is set to take the mound for Tampa Bay, and Philadelphia ace Cristopher Sánchez will make his final case for the NL Cy Young Award.

Let’s break down this potential playoff clincher with some odds and lines at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies Best Bets

  • Under 6.5 (-106): This line is reserved for battles between the best of the best, but given how excellent Peralta has been as of late, that’s exactly what these Dominican stars are.
  • Junior Caminero 1+ Extra-Base Hits (+201): Caminero has effortless pop, ranking third in slugging percentage and second in total bases, and he’s punished lefty sinkers to the tune of a 101.9-MPH average exit velocity.

Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies prediction, preview

The Rays are officially back atop the AL East for the first time since 2021, snapping their two-season playoff drought by confirming at least a Wild Card spot on September 11 and the division on Tuesday. After clinching, Tampa Bay lost the last two games of its series against the New York Yankees, who are locked into the AL’s fourth seed. The Rays enter the playoffs in strong form overall, as they’ve gone 14-8 in September and have posted the league’s ninth-best OPS since the start of the month. Junior Caminero, who’s tied for the American League lead in home runs, is still a top MVP candidate despite posting just an .818 OPS since the All-Star break, and Chandler Simpson only narrowly trails the Houston Astros’ Yordan Álvarez for the batting title. Furthermore, Tampa Bay has had the fourth-best pitching staff this month; Peralta has settled down well after a rough first start with the team, and relievers Bryan Baker and Kevin Kelly have been spectacular. Baker has a 1.47 ERA and 40 saves, putting him in prime contention to win the inaugural BBWA Reliever of the Year award. The Rays are currently favored to win the AL, and their recent form concurs.

By contrast, the Phillies have mostly limped through the last month. Philadelphia has spent most of the season in comfortable position to pick up at least the second Wild Card, especially after a 21-7 August, but it’s just 9-12 so far in September. So far this month, the Phillies have had the league’s worst offense, and Kyle Schwarber actually has just a .757 OPS since the All-Star break despite chasing down another NL home run crown. Bryce Harper, too, hasn’t hit for much power in September, and Luis Arráez sported just a .577 OPS in his final 12 games before suffering an ankle sprain that could conceivably end his season. Philadelphia’s bullpen is a further concern; although the Phillies’ rotation has continued to post an ERA near 3 this month, their relievers have pitched to just a 5.40 mark. Even Jhoan Durán has taken damage on three separate occasions, and trade deadline acquisition Brooks Raley (8.71 ERA in 15 outings, including a 23.63 mark in five September appearances) has been a disaster. The Phillies still have the fourth-best odds to win the NL, thanks to their talented lineup on paper and their rotation trio of Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, and Zack Wheeler, but it is not sunny in Philadelphia right now.

Peralta has basically turned back into the ace he was with the Milwaukee Brewers. He hasn’t given up more than one earned run in any of his last five starts, and he owns a 2.23 mark in the seven starts since opening his Tampa Bay career with one of the most brutal stretches imaginable, road dates in Colorado and West Sacramento. Even after his rough start to the season with the New York Mets (a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts, including a 10-ER game against the Phillies), Peralta still grades out as an above-average pitcher overall, owning a 63rd-percentile xERA and a 58th-percentile xBA. He’s been good at generating chases, exacerbating one of Philadelphia’s biggest weaknesses, and although he infrequently retires batters via strikeout, the Rays have been the league’s second-best fielding team. Furthermore, the Phillies should help mitigate his biggest shortcoming, his 33rd-percentile ground ball rate, and his ability to induce soft contact should be a boon against a lineup with plenty of raw power on paper. His 5.81 road ERA isn’t ideal against baseball’s ninth-best home offense, especially since his worst start came at this venue, but he’s had plenty of sharp performances on unfriendly turf, especially as of late.

Sánchez, the Cy Young runner-up last season, leads all pitchers in WAR for the second straight season, but he’s been a lot more inconsistent in 2026. His June was arguably the greatest month in pitching history, as he threw 39.0 innings of scoreless ball while walking three and striking out 45, but he’s also given up four or more earned runs on seven separate occasions to leave his ERA at 2.93 (sixth in the NL). Despite his recent inconsistency, though, Sánchez’s Baseball Savant page is a sea of red; he ranks in the 77th percentile in xERA and the 90th percentile in pitching run value. He’s been particularly excellent at inducing chases, whiffs, and strikeouts, so he should be well-suited to combat Tampa Bay’s biggest strengths. Sánchez also ranks in the 98th percentile in ground ball rate, and the Rays struggle to get lift on the ball. His occasional propensity to give up hard hits (a 21st-percentile hard-hit rate and 29th-percentile average exit velocity) shouldn’t matter too much against Tampa Bay, which has a lineup completely devoid of power aside from Caminero. Plus, the home-road splits are pretty extreme; Sánchez has pitched to an impeccable 2.21 ERA at home, and the Rays have had a below-average road offense.

Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies pick, best bet

Best Bet: Under 6.5 (-106)

6.5 runs is an extremely low bar for any game, but given how special Peralta has been this month and how special Sánchez has been all season at home, we could be in for a classic pitcher’s duel.

Strong Lean: Junior Caminero 1+ Extra-Base Hits (+201)

Despite not having the best offensive month overall, Caminero has still had an extra-base hit in nine of his 22 games this month (implied +144 odds), and as good as Sánchez is, any pitcher is prone to damage against a hitter with a .644 xSLG against lefty sinkers.
