When does Brothers come out on Apple TV+?

For all the folks who were hoping the marquee collaboration between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson—one of Hollywood’s premier bromances over the last two decades—would be on HBO and take the form of seeing Rust Cohle and Marty Hart back on the case, Apple TV+ & the boys are offering you an enticing pivot. A deliciously-eccentric one, too, which, I suppose, we should expect when these two are given creative freedom together. Brothers, their new series, airs its first episode this Wednesday, September 23rd. Its central premise is a darkly-comic, fictionalized exploration of the (alleged) anecdote McConaughey’s mother shared with Harrelson years back that Matthew and Woody might share a father.

Here’s when to watch the two-episode premiere, and where to catch up afterward.

Brothers series preview

After his daughter’s wedding falls apart, Woody takes his family to Matthew’s Austin ranch for a decompression respite. There, Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (Holland Taylor), lets slip a secret: the two friends might actually be brothers. Woody, of course, immediately wants answers. This complicates things for Matthew, whose individual subplot in the show seems to be an earnest run for the governorship of Texas.

One just hopes the show won’t caricature the eccentricities behind their leading men too much; Apple TV comedies have been known to flatten jokes by overplaying them. If the balance is there, it’ll be perfect: Matthew’s family teases him about his Lincoln commercials, and Woody seems to lean into his reputation for living without a cellphone. Showrunner Lee Eisenberg, whose credits include Jury Duty and Lessons in Chemistry, developed the comedy around those exaggerated versions of the stars.

Brothers cast

Alongside McConaughey and Harrelson, Holland Taylor plays Ma Mac, Natalie Martinez plays Valentina, and Brittany Ishibashi plays Joy. The cast rounds out with guest appearances throughout the season from Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe.
