How Much Money Did Resident Evil Make at the Box Office This Weekend?

After Practical Magic 2 got the fall box office season rolling on a middling note, one of the season’s most anticipated movies is arriving with plenty of buzz. Resident Evil hit theaters on September 18, reviving the franchise with a new vision from director Zach Cregger fresh off of the Oscar-winning Weapons. So how much business did the zombie horror film based on the smash-hit video game series reel in over its first three days on the big screen?

Here is a breakdown of how Resident Evil performed at the box office this past weekend:

Resident Evil Box Office

Resident Evil made an estimated $60.0 million at the box office between September 18 and September 20. The previous film in the franchise, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, opened to just $5.3 million in November 2021. During the Paul W.S. Anderson-Milla Jovovich era of the series, Resident Evil opened to $17.7 million in 2002, Resident Evil: Apocalypse opened to $23.0 million in 2004, Resident Evil: Extinction opened to $23.7 million in 2006, Resident Evil: Afterlife opened to $26.7 million in 2010, Resident Evil: Retribution opened to $21.1 million in 2012 and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opened to $13.6 million in 2016. Adjusted for inflation, Resident Evil: Apocalypse leads the way at $44.4 million, followed by Resident Evil: Extinction at $41.2 million, Resident Evil: Afterlife at $40.4 million, Resident Evil at $34.5 million, Resident Evil: Retribution at $31.6 million, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter at $18.1 million and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City at $6.3 million.

According to Deadline, Resident Evil made $8.8 million in domestic Thursday night previews. That cash is technically counted as part of the film’s $26.6 million Friday gross. It proceeded to make $20.3 million on Saturday and $13.2 million on Sunday. Resident Evil posted the fourth-largest domestic opening weekend by an R-rated movie so far in 2026. That slots it in behind The Odyssey, Backrooms and Scream 7. Resident Evil also ranks No. 3 among horror movie openers this year behind only Backrooms and Scream 7.

Looking beyond the United States and Canada, Resident Evil has reeled in an additional $48.3 million overseas. In total, the film has already grossed $108.3 million worldwide. International grosses powered the tail end of the Paul W.S. Anderson-Milla Jovovich era, with non-domestic markets accounting for roughly 80% of Afterlife and Retribution‘s box office takes, then over 90% for The Final Chapter. Each of those films finished with between $240 million and $315 million overall back in the 2010s.
