As much as I want to pick against Man United for how bad they’ve been recently, Fulham have been worse. The Cottagers sit in the relegation zone after four matches, and have yet to win. They’ve recorded one draw and three losses so far. United aren’t much better in 13th place, but they’ve picked up four points, which is three more than their opposition on Sunday. The Red Devils have won one, drawn one and lost two games so far this season. To make matters worse, they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday after surrendering a 2-0 lead to Brighton as they fell 2-3. Surely things have to get better before they get worse?
Some people had Michael Carrick’s team as a potential title challenger before the season, but we haven’t hit the international break yet and they’re already eight points off the summit and knocked out of a domestic cup. A ringing endorsement. Things are even worse at Craven Cottage. They have one point and a -3 goal difference. They showed signs of life midweek against West Ham in the Carabao Cup, but let’s remember that the Hammers are now a Championship team. Fulham should be winning that game, but when they’ve had winnable games this season against the likes of Sunderland and Crystal Palace, they’ve lost.
Let’s look at the recent history here. In the last five games between the teams in all competitions, Man United have won three of them with one draw and one loss sprinkled in. It’s been fairly even, but the Reds have edged it. That’s what I’m expecting here. I don’t think Man United will run away with this one, but I do think they will get the better of a fairly even matchup considering it’s on the road. The Red Devils need a win bad, and what better opposition to do it against?
