San Diego State Aztecs vs. UCLA Bruins Preview
San Diego State Preview
The Aztecs ran away with a 53-20 win in Week 1, although they did allow back-to-back field goals to open the game. A 43-7 run from late in the first to early in the fourth was all they needed to secure the result, though, and open coach Sean Lewis’ third season with a win. Lewis already took SDSU from three wins in 2024 to nine in 2025, including an appearance in the New Mexico Bowl. That marked their first bowl berths since Brady Hoke was in charge in 2022, at which point they had made 12 straight postseason appearances – excluding their COVID opt-out in 2020.
Former Michigan backup Jayden Denegal is once again the Aztecs’ starting quarterback, having completed 58.8% of his passes for 1,807 yards, nine touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 126.9 passer rating in 2025. Even though he tossed a pick to the Portland State defense, Denegal did prove to be far more efficient to start his 2026 campaign by completing 12-of-17 passes for 137 yards, two touchdowns and a 165.3 passer rating. Denegal also rushed for 21 yards on three carries after going for 99 yards and four touchdowns as a ball-carrier in 2025. At 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, Denegal has been more toolsy than productive to this point in his career.
Colorado State transfer Javion Kinnard was San Diego State’s most efficient runner in Week 1 with his 79 yards on eight carries, but Lucky Sutton was once again the team’s workhorse. He totaled 58 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries to open 2026. In 2025, he 1,297 yards on 254 carries – both Mountain West-highs – with 10 touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Jordin Thomas also added 38 yards on five carries last weekend. Through the air, Oregon transfer Justius Lowe and Nathan Acevedo came down with one touchdown each.
San Diego State’s defense accounted for two interceptions, three passes defended, 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and one fumble recovery in Week 1. They gave up 280 yards passing but it took Portland State 52 attempts to get there. The Pilots also rushed for just 3.2 yards per carry. The Aztecs boasted the No. 6 scoring defense in the country in 2025, ranking top-six in completion percentage against and passing yards allowed per game. Per CBS Sports and TruMedia, however, SDSU entered 2026 ranked No. 66 in returning defensive production, No. 83 in returning defensive efficiency and No. 115 in returning coverage efficiency.
UCLA Preview
The Bruins may have been locked in a tie game in the fourth quarter of their season opener last Saturday, but their ability to pull away down the stretch ultimately matched the story that the numbers told. According to Dropback’s Parker Fleming, UCLA had the 12th-most decisive victory in the country in Week 1, going off net success rate. Bob Chesney’s debut in blue and gold went from promising when they led 21-10 to tense when it was 24-24, but the James Madison transplant enjoyed a 21-0 fourth quarter to end the rivalry matchup on top.
Nico Iamaleava strung together an imperfect performance against Cal in Week 1, completing 14-of-22 passes for 184 yards, no touchdowns and a pick at the end of the first half. That was good for a 124.8 passer rating, but he did add 29 yards and a touchdown on the ground. His rushing production only added to the Bruins’ three-headed monster in the backfield. Anthony Woods and JMU transfer Wayne Knight each got eight carries, with the former totaling 118 yards and two touchdowns and the latter notching 71 yards and three touchdowns. Adding in their receiving work, plus Jaivian Thomas’s 41 yards on five carries, UCLA’s running backs combined for 261 yards and five touchdowns on just 24 touches.
Iamaleava’s favorite target was one of the more familiar ones – Mikey Matthews, who finished with 88 yards on four catches. South Carolina transfer Eric Rowe Jr. also notched three catches and a carry for 48 yards, but Michigan transfer Semaj Morgan, James Madison transfer Landon Ellis and Florida transfer Aidan Mizell were held pretty quiet.
UCLA made a rising star quarterback in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele look human, forcing the Cal signal-caller into two interceptions and a 120.4 passer rating. That checks out with the Bruins ranking No. 26 in returning defensive production and No. 15 in returning coverage efficiency, led by starting corners Rodrick Pleasant and Scooter Jackson, safety Cole Martin, Iowa State transfer Ta’Shawn James and Utah transfer Tao Johnson. Oklahoma transfer linebacker Samuel Omosigho also proved to be a massive addition with his 14 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack and forced fumble alongside returning veteran Jalen Woods and his 11 tackles.
San Diego State Aztecs vs. UCLA Bruins Pick, Best Bets
It’s a fool’s errand to play the transitive game in college football these days, especially between seasons, but San Diego State did beat Cal 34-0 in September 2025. But jumping forward a year, there isn’t much reason to believe that these Aztecs are anywhere near as talented defensively as those ones. This UCLA defense, on the other hand, seems to be better than advertised. Sutton is the key to San Diego State keeping things close, based on the fact that Cal workhorse Adam Mohammed totaled 166 yards from scrimmage on 35 touches a week ago.
As of Thursday afternoon, 100% of moneyline bets are on the Bruins. When it comes to the 12.5-point spread, 84% of bets are on UCLA to cover as favorites. 82% of bets on the 54.5-point total are on the over, too. The only one of those I’m not so sure on is the over, since SDSU leaning on Sutton could draw out possessions and muck things up a bit. The game could still go over – the two sides had point totals of 69 and 73 a week ago – but one of those came against an FCS opponent. So while it’s still a little early in the season for me to feel great about how the game scripts will impact point totals, there’s a good reason so many people are confident in the Bruins pulling away and winning by multiple scores in their Rose Bowl opener.
