There’s a top-tier battle between postseason contenders in the National League tonight, and to top it off, they’re division rivals. The Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves are set to square off at Truist Park with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. ET. The best part? It’s Chris Sale bump day for the Braves.

Phillies vs. Braves prediction, preview
Is there a chance that the Phillies could catch the Braves for the NL East lead down the home stretch? It’s unlikely, but possible if this series goes in Philly’s favor. Atlanta currently holds the top spot at 86-61 with a four-game lead and a +110 run differential. Philadelphia isn’t far behind at 82-65 with a +37 differential, and while the club may not overtake its rival on the mountaintop, the good news is it still holds a 3.5-game lead in the Wild Card picture.
Veteran RHP Aaron Nola (6-10) is set to start for the visiting Phillies tonight. He’s bounced back this year after a poor 2025 and has a 4.76 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP, but it’s the 162 strikeouts over 155 IP that are more enticing. His K% is 24.4% with a 7.8% BB%, though his barrel rate and hard-hit rate allowed to opposing batters are both below average.
For the Braves, LHP Chris Sale (14-9) gets the nod this evening. The veteran ace has been electric this year, defying Father Time to produce one of the best seasons of his career. Sale’s ERA reads 2.10 with a 1.01 WHIP and 184 strikeouts over 150 IP. His K% is an elite 30.6% with a low 4.8% BB%, generating a 97th-percentile chase rate as well. His peripherals all grade out above the MLB average, possessing a very impressive Baseball Savant profile.
Looking at the numbers over the second half, the Phillies’ bats sit 15th in wRC+ but eighth in total runs scored (235) and OPS (.731), even despite the club’s ISO dropping to 19th (.150). Notably, the K% at the dish has come down to 19.6% as well, also eighth best in baseball. As for the Braves, they haven’t quite been performing at their peak over the same sample. Their wRC+ falls 23rd and they’re 24th in total runs scored (211) while dropping to 17th in OPS (.708). Atlanta does still rank 10th in ISO (.161) and sixth in home runs (62) over this sample, though.
Phillies vs. Braves pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Braves as a -187 Moneyline favorite at home this evening, while the Phillies are a +154 underdog on the road. The total is set at just seven combined runs.
Sale has been ridiculously good over the second half. Across his eight starts, he’s produced a 1.90 ERA with an 0.81 WHIP, allowing just 11 earned runs over his 52 IP. However, it seems that his workload is being managed for the most part – he’s thrown more than 6.0 innings only twice over those eight appearances and only once over his five outings since August 1. With the postseason approaching, Atlanta in pole position for the division and a standout bullpen that ranks sixth in ERA over the second half backing him, it feels more likely than not that Sale remains under the line of 18.5 outs recorded on DraftKings Sportsbook. It’s not a flashy pick at -161 odds, but this under feels like a very steady bet as the Braves keep their ace healthy for the stretch run.
