Who can suppress all the greatest forces of competitive volatility for six outs? The juicy NRFI—a wager on sequencing, on command showing up immediately, on hitters needing just one more pitch to calibrate. Even this early in the season, the modern game is louder than ever—exit velocity, launch angle, damage on contact. But the first inning still lives in a narrower band, where timing lags just enough behind power to create silence.
With that in mind, here are my top three NRFI picks for Sunday’s full slate of MLB action.
Yankees vs. Padres NRFI
Gerrit Cole has allowed three runs in 18 first-inning frames, with 22 strikeouts against five walks and a .212 opponent on-base percentage. Michael King has allowed three runs in 28 first innings, backed by a .130 opponent average. And all we need is six outs with no one getting home.
These are fat lineups, however. New York’s projected opening three are Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, and Luis García Jr.; Rice and García both are always good for big damage against right-handed pitching. San Diego’ll run out Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth, and Manny Machado, with Cronenworth carrying just a .586 OPS against righties.
King’s 13 first-inning walks are the part I dislike most, because we know a free runner changes the price of the next hard swing. Petco is forecast to be warm, so I’m giving the pitchers the credit rather than manufacturing a weather edge.
Red Sox vs. Orioles NRFI
Bradish is almost the whole focus here, and he is a substantial one: two runs allowed in 27 first innings, a 0.67 ERA, and 33 strikeouts. He has allowed one first-inning homer all season. Payton Tolle has been leaky as of late, but eight runs in 23 opening frames is fine, and when you square it with a 26:6 K/BB, it is plenty bettable. Together, they offer enough strike-throwing and whiff potentialto warrant a NRFI wager.
Boston is confirmed to open with Roman Anthony, Mickey Gasper, and Adley Rutschman; Gasper has five homers and a 1.361 OPS since August 20. Baltimore counters with Blaze Alexander, Pete Alonso, and Coby Mayo. Mayo’s the one I’m most worried about in the first frame. Having said that, forecast’s modest breeze inward helps around the margins. It won’t come close, however to rescuing a mistake pitch. There simply better not be one from either pitcher.
I’ll play this at −135 or better. Beyond that, Bradish’s beautiful first-inning line starts costing more than I want to pay for Tolle’s assignment.
Yankees vs. Red Sox NRFI
In 12 first innings, the Rays’ Seymour has allowed two runs while striking out 20 and walking two. That is a persuasive amount of control over how an inning develops, even after shrinking a small sample. His projected assignment begins with Ezequiel Duran, Corey Seager, and Wyatt Langford, and the left-on-left meeting with Seager gives him one useful matchup near the top.
Gore’s half is where we’ll have to do a little sweating. He has allowed 13 runs in 29 first innings, and Tampa Bay projects Yandy Díaz, Ryan Vilade, and Junior Caminero against him. All three own an OPS above .830 against lefties; Caminero is at .943 and has eight hard-hit balls in his last 10 BIPs. It’s no slouch of a lineup, but Gore’s got the ability to silence the bats for one frame. Three outs. All we need.
