James Madison Dukes vs. Liberty Flames prediction, pick for College Football Week 1 on Saturday 9/05/26

What do you say we kick off Week 1 with the Battle for the Blue Ridge, huh? Liberty and James Madison renew their in-state bloodbath Saturday at noon in Harrisonburg. James Madison won last season’s first installment 31-13, and now the market’s asking the Dukes to win this rematch by just over six points. However, despite the win last year, I think their offseason overhaul makes that margin a little too too ambitious. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s college football game between the James Madison Dukes and the Liberty Flames.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

James Madison vs. Liberty prediction, preview

ames Madison’s 2025 was dreamy. It earned its first Sun Belt title and a College Football Playoff berth last year. The defense allowed only 18.4ppg and 266.6 yards/game. That sort of stubborn lockdown stuff explains why they might be the favorite on the board, but most of the personnel and staff behind last year’s success have moved on. Former Gators HC Billy Napier replaces Bob Chesney as coach, and the Dukes have only five starters returning

The offensive reset is where you feel it the most. James Madison’s 2025 quarterback, Alonza Barnett, is long gone, as are its five leading rushers, four leading receivers, and four starting linemen. That’s ground-up type stuff. Richmond transfer Camden Coleman and sophomore JC Evans competed for QB1 under Napier’s new scheme. Whichever comes out the tunnel first will make his first James Madison start against an experienced opponent.

Liberty also has some uncertainty at quarterback, but not in the same way JMU does. QB Ethan Vasko started 10 games last season and accounted for 15 total touchdowns, but their quarterback gameplan tends to rotate personnel, emphasize the ground game. Four returning offensive linemen should help Liberty HC Jamey Chadwell keep protected whichever option runs his misdirection-heavy scheme.

Liberty vs. James Madison pick, best bet

The Flames also built a deep backfield around Kam Davis, Peyton Jones, and Kanye Udoh. All three made the Doak Walker Award watch list. The theme here is Liberty’s ability to keep getting fresh legs out there on offense against a reconstructed and ungelled defense, especially if the forecasted scattered afternoon storms make explosive passing less of a possibility. Liberty is going to discipline themselves into sustained rushing success so as to keep the home crowd from controlling this game.

James Madison still, of course, owns the better defensive baseline, and are still in the middle of a seven-game home winning streak. But those are vestiges of, literally, yesteryear. The Dukes can win without immediately reproducing last year’s 37.1ppg offense, however. Ten of the series’ previous 19 meetings finished within seven points. I expect Napier’s new squad and recruited talent to prevail tight and late, but Liberty’s continuity should keep it close enough to let the dog bark.

Best bet: Liberty +6 (-110)

Projected score: James Madison 27, Liberty 24

Best Bet: Liberty +6 (-110) at James Madison
