Alabama Crimson Tide vs. East Carolina Pirates prediction, pick for College Football Week 1

By: Blake Krass

The Alabama Crimson Tide take on the East Carolina Pirates in a non-conference battle to kick off their seasons. The game kicks off at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The Crimson Tide are listed as 35.5-point home favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, with the total set at O/U 54.5 points. Below is my full preview, prediction and best bet for this Week 1 matchup.

Alabama vs. East Carolina prediction, preview

East Carolina Preview

This could be a tough season for East Carolina. Blake Harrell has done an excellent job since taking over the program as interim head coach in 2024, leading the team to nine wins in 2025. However, the Pirates lost their star quarterback to Illinois during the offseason. This season, the Pirates are rolling with Mitch Griffis at quarterback. Griffis has limited experience from his time at Wake Forest and Texas Tech, where he did not play particularly well. Griffis was unable to win the backup quarterback job at Texas Tech last season when the Red Raiders needed one. He should be a significant step down from Houser and really struggle in this first start at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama Preview

This is a massive season for Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide. DeBoer’s seat was getting warm heading into the 2025 season. However, he took Alabama to the SEC title game and the College Football Playoff, where he won a game before losing to Indiana in the quarterfinals. DeBoer’s offense looked much better after he brought in his old offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. DeBoer and Grubb now need to prove they can do it again with a new quarterback, Keelon Russell. Russell beat out Austin Mack in an offseason quarterback competition. He is an incredible talent who perfectly fits the DeBoer/Grubb system; he now just needs to prove himself in real game action.

Alabama vs. East Carolina Pick

My best bet for this game is for Alabama to go over its team total of 40.5 points. The Crimson Tide should try to make a statement in this opening game. Last season, they lost their season opener to Florida State. In response to that bad loss, they steamrolled LA-Monroe 73-0. Later in that season, they demolished Eastern Illinois 56-0. In Kalen DeBoer’s first season in charge, their non-conference results looked like this: 63-0 against Western Kentucky, 42-16 against South Florida and 52-7 against Mercer.

Alabama has scored at least 42 points in all five games against non-Power Four opponents with Kalen DeBoer as Alabama head coach. Keelon Russell should hit the ground running, and if they turn to the backups, Austin Mack will also want to prove that he is still fighting for a chance to be the Alabama starting quarterback in the future. The Crimson Tide should clear this team total to start the 2026 season.

Best Bet: Alabama Team Total Over 40.5 Points (-115)
