Miami came within one possession of a national title, falling just short in January vs. Indiana. A reloaded Hurricanes squad is itching for a return trip to the championship game. Before The U can think about the postseason, it needs to take care of business against its ACC foes. Stanford, following a win last weekend vs. Hawaii, will be looking to kick off conference play with a major upset. Will the Cardinal put up a fight this evening in Palo Alto?
The Hurricanes are listed as 24.5-point favorites over the Cardinal, with the total set at O/U 48.5 points. Below is my full preview, prediction and best bet for Friday’s Miami vs. Stanford Week 1 matchup.
Miami vs. Stanford prediction, preview
As great as last season was for the Hurricanes, they did lose two games to ACC foes. Overlooking anyone, even a rebuilding Stanford program, would be unwise. With that being said, Mario Cristobal’s crew has all the makings of an elite club this season. Coming into this season as the nation’s seventh-ranked team, Miami’s strength should be on offense. Quarterback Carson Beck is gone, but replacement Darian Mensah is no slouch. Last season with Duke, he led the ACC with 3,973 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. He’ll have a wide array of weapons to throw to this year, including freshman phenom Malachi Toney. On the ground, Mark Fletcher Jr., CharMar Brown and Girard Pringle Jr. form one of college football’s better trios. In 2025, they combined for 2,041 rushing yards and 27 total touchdowns. It helps that they’re playing behind a stout offensive line as well.
There could be a bit of a learning curve on the other side of the ball. Gone are imposing pass rushers Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor. Regardless, the front seven is expected to bring the heat in 2026. A bigger question mark is the secondary, which had been a problem prior to last season. Miami’s +0.5 turnover margin per game suggests some regression to the mean, although it’s fair to say the team’s defensive backs have a knack for takeaways. The Hurricanes only gave up 6.3 yards per pass attempt last season, third-best in the ACC.
Stanford won by ten against Hawaii, although it took a late-game fumble to truly put it away. Regardless, any win is good for a school that went 4-8 in 2025. The team’s fortunes this season likely come down to the play of quarterback Davis Warren. The Michigan transfer impressed during his team debut, throwing for 310 yards and a touchdown against the Rainbow Warriors. Given his Big Ten experience, he’s no stranger to high-caliber competition either. It helps that standout running back Micah Ford will be providing support on the ground. Last season, the now-junior recorded 643 rushing yards in just nine games.
The biggest issue for Stanford is the secondary. There’s no sugarcoating it: this group was nothing short of horrendous in 2025. They coughed up 288.9 passing yards per game to opponents, second-worst among all FBS schools. Things didn’t look much better last weekend, in which Hawaii’s Micah Alejado threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns. There’s no telling what an even better passer in Mensah can do on Friday. On the bright side, there are some solid pieces in the front seven. That alone should lend itself to modest improvement on defense this season.
Best Bet: Stanford +24.5 (-115)
It’s tempting to back a Miami blowout. After all, there’s a reason this group enters the season as overwhelming ACC favorites. Still, there’s several new pieces that have joined the team this offseason. It wouldn’t be a shock if this offense, especially the passing game, needs time to gel. To boot, the Hurricanes have played down to their competition several times during the Cristobal era. If Warren and Ford can maintain a decent time of possession, Stanford should prevent this one from getting ugly at home.
