Golden Gophers HC P.J. Fleck enters his 10th Minnesota season, still equipped with both his 2025 coordinators, and, somehow, most of last year’s offense. Eastern Illinois is celebrating its FBS berth in 2025, and they’ve already popped on-screen in a 28-14 win over Murray State in Week 0. The ground game was almost the entire deciding factor in that contest; the Panthers ran 47 times and drained 33 minutes off the game clock. And that’s precisely what we’ll want to keep a close eye on, here. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s college football game between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Eastern Illinois Panthers.

Minnesota vs. Eastern Illinois prediction, preview
EIU HC Chris Wilkerson added a whopping 56 newcomers as the university graduated to the bigs, which makes last year’s RB holdover Charles Kellom’s veteran presence all the more crucial for a gelling locker room. He rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns in the opener, and was, to be honest, most of the on-screen pop I mentioned earlier. EIU’s got an absolute stud at center, Rahfeeq Katumbusi—he’s line’s lone returning starter. The big fella anchors a ground-and-pound Wilkerson gameplan built to minimize possessions, milk clock, etc.. Even a couple sustained EIU drives makes a 43-point Minnesota margin harder to build, and nearly impossible to separate.
Minnesota’s defense will do their very best to snuff Kellom & the run game out from the jump. They are, after all, much more difficult a draw than Murray State. Minnesota allowed just 3.7 yards per rush last season. There are standouts, too. Edge rusher Anthony Smith led the Big Ten with 12.5 sacks, while linebacker Maverick Baranowski racked up triple-digit (103) tackles. Should the Panthers turn to the pass, they’ll be playing right into the Golden Gophers’ hands. EIU quarterback Cole LaCrue rushed for 498 yards and seven touchdowns last year, and his legs are his most dangerous asset. LaCrue threw for only 101 yards in the opener, and tallied seven picks in 2025. Minnesota’s ball hawks will be zipping around.
On the other sideline, Mnnesota OC Greg Harbaugh Jr. retained quarterback Drake Lindsey and four starting linemen, which is the sort of continuity programs love. Lindsey threw 18 touchdowns & six interceptions as a freshman in 2025. Gophers’ RB Darius Taylor ended last season with two consecutive 100-yard games, and looks ready to take the next leap in his production profile. EIU only returned three defensive starters, and the secondary surrendered 257 passing yards to Murray State. If Taylor can get going, Lindsey should have no problem carving up this borderline-FBS defense for a few early touchdowns.
Eastern Illinois vs. Minnesota pick, best bet
Because, indeed, Minnesota has pulverized its last two FCS visitors, winning the first 48-0 and the next 66-0. The second bludgeoning included two defensive touchdowns and only two first downs allowed. Having said that, I think EIU’s ball security and Kellom give this pesky underdog a solid clock-management gameplan. Minnesota may control the game, but they won’t need to chase points deep into the fourth.
The 42.5-point spread and 51.5 total imply approximately Minnesota 47, EIU 4.5. A lone EIU touchdown forces the Gophers to reach 50, which they managed just once last season. Minnesota’s starters should create separation early and take its foot off the gas pedal in the fourth quarter.
Best bet: Eastern Illinois +42.5 (-110), playable to +41.5.
