It’s good to be the defending champs. The Seattle Seahawks are riding high into this year after winning the Super Bowl last season and will be determined to run it back. But the road back to the mountaintop isn’t any easier the second time around.

A first-place season means a first-place schedule. 11 of the 17 games Seattle will play are against last season’s playoff team, including five of the six other teams in the NFC playoff picture. That starts with a Week 1 Super Bowl rematch with the New England Patriots, and things only get more difficult from then on. Like every year, those NFC West matchups between the Seahawks, Rams, and 49ers will hold significant sway over the league.
Like most champions, Seattle suffered more losses than gains in the offseason. Most notably, Kenneth Walker III left for the Chiefs, as the Super Bowl MVP wanted to join forces with Patrick Mahomes. They also lost Coby Bryant and Boye Mafe on defense, two key contributors to their league-best defense in 2025. But they did sign key extensions to maintain the core and did well in the draft; there’s little reason to believe Seattle has lost a step.
However, the oddsmakers aren’t convinced they can repeat their 14-win performance. The Super Bowl hangover is real, and it’s not uncommon to see defending Super Bowl champs take a step back in the wins column. Their division is no less tough; San Francisco and Los Angeles are serious contenders as usual, and each beat Seattle once this past season. And after being one of the healthiest teams in the NFL this past season, can Seattle keep up their luck?
More than most teams, this hinges on the quarterback. Now that Kenneth Walker III is gone, it’s in the hands of Sam Darnold to keep this offense in order. Unless first-round pick Jadarian Price hits the ground running, there’s going to be more pressure on Darnold to sling the ball, and results have been mixed. It’s no coincidence that Darnold’s best seasons have come on teams with excellent defenses and strong run games. When the chips are down and points are needed, can he drive the offense to the promised land?

I’m not buying complete Seahawks regression this year. For my money, they’re still the team to beat in the West, especially with Mike Macdonald’s defense humming along. There may be some hiccups with the offense, but they are rock solid top to bottom, and will be back in the playoffs when it’s all said and done.
