BvP. It’s maybe the most polarizing stat in the world of daily fantasy baseball and MLB betting.
While it would seem obvious that a batter’s history with a specific pitcher would be incredibly important and useful information, BvP numbers laugh in the face of sample size. They not only make us draw conclusions from an amount of at-bats that could take place over the course of two or three games, but remember, those games could have happened a half decade ago.
That said, I’d want to know if someone has a couple home runs of a starter that’s pitching tonight. Who wouldn’t?
In this space, I’ll attempt to toe the line between BvP love and hate. Let’s look at some matchups and see if history really is going to mean success on tonight’s slate.

BvP Matchup Analysis
Ronald Acuna Jr. vs. Jake Irvin | 1.438 OPS (10 ABs)
It’s a little surprising that these two haven’t seen more of each other over the past four years, but Acuna’s been oft injured since 2024. Speaking of time on the IL, Irvin returned from a two-month stay on the injured list on July 30, only to be greeted by an Acuna Jr. home run. While I’d like to say that makes Acuna special, there aren’t many people in the National League who haven’t hit a long ball off Irvin at this point. The RHP surrendered 38 in 2025 — the most of any pitcher in baseball. In his six starts since getting healthy? 2.10 opponent home runs per nine conceded. You don’t need BvP to tell you this is a good matchup.
Andres Gimenez vs. Gavin Williams | 1.429 OPS (7 ABs)
These ones are always a little fun, as Gimenez was Williams’ Gold Glove second baseman for the first two seasons of his MLB career. However, since being traded to Toronto, Gimenez has gotten his “revenge” on his former teammate by going 4-for-7 (.571) with a pair of doubles. Now, Gimenez is not exactly known for his bat. In fact, among the 163 hitters with at least 400 plate appearances this season, Gimenez ranks 159th in expected wOBA (.267). That said, Williams owns a first percentile opponent hard hit rate (47.6%) and a second percentile opponent barrel rate (12.0%) so far in 2026. When he gets hit, he gets hit hard. That’s why it’s not shocking to also see George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. listed above.
Adley Rutschman vs. Bryan Woo | 1.333 OPS (9 ABs)
No one on the Red Sox’s roster at the end of July had good numbers against Bryan Woo, so the club had to bring in Adley Rutschman. However, even with the duo’s history, this is probably not the time you want to be backing the switch-hitting catcher. Rutschman’s been ice cold since joining Boston, though it should be noted his trade to Beantown coincided with his return from a lengthy IL stint. Whatever the case may be, nerves or rust, Rutschman is slashing a paltry .170/.254/.245 with a 41 wRC+ as a member of the Sox. He has preferred to hit from the left-side of the batter’s box in 2026 as a whole, yet I’m still underwhelmed by the matchup.
