Chicago White Sox vs. Houston Astros prediction, pick for Monday 8/31/26

It might not feel like it, but this is a game between two teams currently leading their division.

To be fair to the White Sox, their success is no longer a surprise, and they once again validated that perception last week by taking series against playoff hopefuls in Minnesota and Texas. Chicago is simply a good baseball team.

The Astros I’m less sure about. Houston is just one game above .500 coming into Monday’s action, yet because of the underwhelming play of teams like the Rangers and the Mariners, the club is somehow nestled into a postseason berth.

Can the Astros start building a bit of a cushion in the AL West? Let’s dive into this tilt on the final day of August and make a couple picks on the DraftKings Sportsbook.

White Sox vs. Astros prediction, preview

If there has been an unlikely MVP of the Astros’ season — you know, aside from AL MVP frontrunner Yordan Alvarez — it’s been Peter Lambert. Formerly a second-round pick of the Rockies, Lambert returned to MLB in 2026 after spending a year in the NPB. Ironically, the right-hander wasn’t even the most notable NPB arm that the Astros signed this offseason, but he has easily been the most effective. Across 23 starts and 128.0 innings, Lambert has maintained a 3.66 ERA with a 3.54 xERA. The 29-year-old doesn’t throw especially hard, and he’s not exactly a strikeout artist, but he’s done a nice job suppressing loud opponent contact and that’s translated into an 83rd percentile opponent expected batting average (.211). Lambert’s also just surrendered two earned runs or fewer in 14 of his last 16 outings. Sometimes it’s that simple.

Lately, Houston has needed it’s pitching staff to shoulder the load, so Lambert’s steadiness has been appreciated. Over the past 14 days, the Astros are ranking 27th in batting average (.213), 23rd in wRC+ (84) and dead-last in expected wOBA (.279). This isn’t a roster that can find other ways to generate runs, either, as Houston is one of two teams in baseball with fewer than 50 stolen bases through five months. While the aforementioned Alvarez is far from the top of the blame list, it is worth noting that the All-Star slugger hasn’t quite been the best version of himself in August. Now, a “poor” Alvarez still means a 134 wRC+ in the month, but this Astros lineup isn’t as deep as the World Series years. To function, they necessitate more than two home runs and a .176 ISO from Alvarez.

If Yordan is getting back on track this evening, he’ll have to do so against the left-handed Anthony Kay. The southpaw has certainly kept opposing LHBs in check this season, holding lefties to a .188/.255/.271 slash line, but everything else has been a little suspect. Kay’s 4.94 xERA ranks in the 16th percentile of the league, and his 22nd percentile strikeout rate isn’t much better (18.4%). In general, Kay’s been solid, if unspectacular, since a very rocky start in March and April. However, I fear he could run into issues with a predominantly right-handed Houston lineup.

White Sox vs. Astros pick, best bet

Best Bet: Astros ML (-127)

The Astros are 10-6 in Peter Lambert’s past 16 starts — a span where the RHP has allowed two earned runs or fewer 14 times. He’s found the consistency that Anthony Kay has lacked in 2026, so I’ll side with the pitching advantage and the home team.

Strong Lean: Jeremy Pena 2+ Total Bases (+117)

For his career, Pena is batting .297 against LHPs with a 126 wRC+. More recently, Pena’s managed multiple hits in three of his last seven games, a span where he also has three long balls. Hitting in the Astros’ leadoff spot, the infielder should have the opportunity to make some noise.
