North Dakota State Bison vs. Jacksonville State Gamecocks prediction, pick for CFB Week 0 on Saturday 8/29/26

North Dakota State begins its FBS era inside the Fargodome following a 12-1 final FCS season. Tim Polasek owns a 26-3 record across two seasons, including the 2024 national championship. Jacksonville State went 9-5 and reached its second consecutive Conference USA championship game. This matchup represents an immediate physical test for both programs.Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s college football game between the North Dakota State Bison and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

NDSU vs. Jacksonville State prediction, preview

NDSU averaged 41.1 points, 451.4 yards, and 7.3 yards per play last season. Its offense rushed for 212.6 yards while converting 46.9% of third downs. Cole Payton, Barika Kpeenu, and Bryce Lance leave enormous production behind. Their departures explain why the market stopped around one touchdown.

Nathan Hayes replaces Payton after completing 25 of 44 attempts for 381 yards last season. He produced four touchdowns against one interception and flashed useful mobility. NDSU can ease his transition behind Griffin Empey, Nate Tastad, and Josh Magin. That veteran line powered a 5.2-yard rushing average during 2025.

DJ Scott averaged 5.3 yards and scored six touchdowns in secondary work. He now receives the first opportunity behind NDSU’s deepest offensive position group. Jacksonville State allowed 144.3 rushing yards and 4.0 yards per carry last season. The Gamecocks also return only five defensive starters.

Jacksonville State’s offense revolves around Caden Creel’s zone-read ability. Creel passed for 1,514 yards while rushing for another 1,075. He produced six games with 100 rushing and 100 passing yards. His decision-making powered a 7-2 record across his nine starts.

Creel now loses national rushing leader Cam Cook and four starting offensive linemen. Only center Lucas Mrachkovskiy returns from a unit supporting 246.8 rushing yards per game. That turnover matters against an NDSU defense allowing 3.2 yards per carry. The Bison also surrendered only 13.0 points and 251.8 yards per game.

NDSU generated 33 sacks, 19 interceptions, and 28 total takeaways during 2025. Opponents converted only 30.8% of their third downs. Jacksonville State’s option structure will produce occasional explosives, especially through Creel and 6-foot-8 receiver Deondre Johnson. Sustaining long drives should prove much harder behind the rebuilt line.

Jacksonville State vs. NDSU pick, best bet

he Fargodome removes weather variance and amplifies NDSU’s home-field communication advantage. Jacksonville State must install new protection combinations inside one of college football’s loudest indoor environments. False starts and negative plays could repeatedly place Creel outside the preferred rushing script. NDSU’s disciplined edges can force him toward interior pursuit.

Jacksonville State’s turnover production presents the main concern. The Gamecocks have forced at least 24 takeaways during three consecutive seasons. Hayes must avoid obvious passing situations and protect possession. NDSU’s line and rushing depth provide the cleanest route toward achieving both goals.

The 46.5 total implies a compressed game with limited possessions. That environment increases the importance of field position, rushing efficiency, and defensive consistency. NDSU owns advantages across all three categories. Its 5-2 record against FBS opponents since 2011 also supports the program’s readiness.

I expect Jacksonville State to remain competitive through halftime. NDSU’s line depth should control the final 30 minutes, while Creel absorbs cumulative contact. A ten-point projection provides usable clearance beyond the six-point threshold. I would avoid chasing this position beyond -7.

Best bet: North Dakota State -6.5 (-115)

Projected score: North Dakota State 27, Jacksonville State 17

Best Bet: NDSU -6.5 (-115) vs. Jacksonville State
