San Francisco Giants vs. Arizona Diamondbacks prediction, pick for MLB on Friday 8/28/26

Arizona’s postseason chase absorbed a sharp interruption Thursday when San Francisco opened this series with a 6-1 victory. The Diamondbacks stand 71-64, 1.5 games behind San Diego for the final National League wild card. San Francisco sits 55-79 with elimination already settled. The Giants still possess enough young malice to complicate September for everybody else. They have scored 33 runs with 11 homers across their last seven games. Their .261/.329/.461 line produced a .790 OPS during that span. Arizona won eight of this season’s first nine meetings before Thursday. That history now collides with a severe pitching disadvantage and the continued absence of Ketel Marte. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Giants vs. Diamondbacks prediction, preview

Kohl Drake’s 5.40 ERA dramatically understates the danger. He has allowed 20 hits, six walks, and three homers across 16.2 major-league innings. Statcast assigns him an 8.75 xERA, .430 xwOBA, and extraordinary .625 expected slugging percentage. Opponents have averaged 91.6 mph with 49.1% hard hits and 16.4% barrels. They have lifted 74.5% of their contact into the air. Drake throws his four-seamer 44%, and hitters own a .636 xSLG against it. The pitch has also surrendered 54.8% hard contact. San Francisco’s expected order contains seven consecutive left-handed hitters. That sounds favorable for Drake until his small lefty sample reveals a 1.056 OPS allowed.

Blade Tidwell owns the cleaner shape on every meaningful level. He has recorded a 3.58 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts across 32.2 innings. His 3.24 xERA and .280 xwOBA support the surface results. Opponents have managed 87.5 mph contact, 38.9% hard hits, and only 5.6% barrels. Tidwell’s 37.1% sweeper has limited hitters to a .256 slugging percentage and .183 expected wOBA. He followed six runs and five walks against Colorado with 5.2 scoreless innings against Boston. The seven strikeouts in that rebound showed his ceiling. Lefties own a .787 OPS against him, compared with .392 for righties. Corbin Carroll, Lars Nootbaar, and Max Kepler therefore retain a credible Arizona counterattack.

San Francisco’s young order looks unusually well designed to punish Drake’s elevated fastball. Drew Gilbert homered on Thursday’s first pitch and now owns eight homers. He has added two homers and three doubles across his last 21 at-bats. Rafael Devers has crushed four homers in 25 recent at-bats. His full-season power includes 29 homers, 92.7 mph contact, 50.4% hard hits, and 11% barrels. Bryce Eldridge followed Thursday’s leadoff spark with an eighth-inning RBI double. Jung Hoo Lee extended that rally after grinding through a 10-pitch walk. This group can make Drake work before its loudest contact arrives. San Francisco’s recent production has finally placed traffic around Devers.

Diamondbacks vs. Giants pick, best bet

Marte’s absence remains complicated, painful, and larger than baseball. He missed the August 17 game in Boston without properly communicating and initially landed on the restricted list. An MRI later revealed left-knee inflammation, leading to an injection and injured-list placement. Marte subsequently met with Torey Lovullo, Mike Hazen, and his agent. Recent reporting indicates he was grieving an impending family loss after losing his maternal grandmother last year. That context deserves more weight than the casino sighting or anonymous clubhouse irritation. Marte acknowledged that he handled the communication poorly. He continues rehabbing at Salt River Fields and could return Monday, although that remains uncertain. Arizona misses his 21 homers, 67 RBIs, and .362 expected on-base influence tonight.

Gabriel Moreno keeps the Diamondbacks dangerous after homering for the third time in 10 games Thursday. He owns a .303/.383/.471 line, 11 homers, and 66 RBIs. Carroll adds an .825 OPS, 18 homers, and elite baserunning pressure. Tidwell’s left-handed split gives both hitters a path. San Francisco’s 4.20 bullpen ERA and 1.41 WHIP also leave the late innings exposed. Arizona’s relievers own a similar 4.18 ERA, although their 1.24 WHIP offers greater stability. Oracle Park should sit near 61 degrees despite 13 mph wind toward the outfield. Drake’s contact risk outweighs that marine restraint. Tidwell’s walks and San Francisco’s bullpen represent the failure path.

Best bet: Giants ML at +107, playable to -105.

Projected score: Giants 5, Diamondbacks 3.

Best bet: Giants (+105) vs. Diamondbacks
